| greater minds than i have already fucking fixed this problem...... UPDATE 2: I've been thinking about how the problem is posed (for now as I'm typing this) and it occurred to me that the constraint "run at the same speed as whatever the planes tyres rotation speed" actually means run such that the plane doesn't move with respect to the ground. Consider a wheel of radius R on a treadmill. The treadmill surface has a linear speed vT to the right. The center of the wheel has a linear speed vP to the left. The CCW angular speed of the wheel is: ω=vT+vPR If "run at the same speed as whatever the planes tyres rotation speed" means: ω=vTR then the constraint requires vP=0. That is, the question, as posed, is: If the treadmill is run such that the plane doesn't move, will the plane take off? Obviously, the answer is no. The plane must move to take off. Looking at mwengler's long answer, we see what is happening. The rotational speed of the tires and treadmill are not the key, it is the acceleration of the treadmill that imparts a force on the wheel axles (ignoring friction for simplicity here). So, it is in fact the case that it is possible, in principle, ( don't think it is possible in practice though) to control the treadmill in such a way that it imparts a holding force on the plane, preventing it from moving. But, once again, this force is not proportional to the wheels rotational speed, but to the wheel's angular acceleration (note that in the idealized case of massless wheels, it isn't even possible in principle as the lower the moment of inertia of the wheels, the greater the required angular acceleration). #132 -
anon (08/04/2015) [-] The wheels don't move the plane, the Jet engines still generate thrust... Even if the runway is moving in the oposite direction, the engines will still push the plane forward. The wheels will rotate at double the speed they usually would, but the plane will still move forward. The forward motion will cause air to pass over and under the wings, thus generating lift. Given a long enough runway (and thus time to accelerate), it WILL take off. #144 -
anon (08/04/2015) [-] A plane will indeed take off with its brakes applied. The brakes are built to bring the craft to a stop when it's coasting around, not to hold the plane stationary at full throttle. Do you know what a pre-flight is? During the pre-flight, the engine is running full throttle with brakes applied during one test. The plane will sit still. #204 -
anon (08/04/2015) [-] No, it really isn't. Friction is independant of speed so once you overcome it with thrust then the plane will slide along the floor. This doesn't change whether the wheels are locked or not. The wheels are there in a plane only to reduce friction. | ||
