I'm saving up for a better computer in order to get the new Shogun, but I have to admit, Rome has something that beats the others.

It took me a while to figure out, but it has a lot of different units, much more than the others. Sure, you have archers in every faction, but there are a lot more soldiers types around. The Roman infantry easily beats the warbands of the Gauls, Brits and Germans, and the infantry of the Spanish and Carthagians, while going against hoplites is a suicidal thing to do (learned that after one big mistake during a city assault and my opponent simply blocked the roads with hoplites. My Hastati got slaughtered T_T)

There are much more units, making the game much more diverse and fun.

But Sterling Silver? Third Age? It's been a while since I looked into Total War lately, could you tell me about them?

Stirling Silver isn an enhancement of Vanilla. Makes the game much better by fixing a lot of bugs. And Third age is Lord of the Rings Total War.

Dude, when you get it, add Dragonchampion on Steam. Shogun 2 adds coop grand campaign.

The Sherwoord and Yeoman archers are pretty awesome indeed, since they are good even against armour, and their stakes are lethal to cavalry charges, so that makes them decent. It's a matter of taste though, I like fielding a large variety of infantry on the field, send spearmen into battle with cavalry and infantry alike, then send in two handed weaponweaponwielders (like the Varangian Guard, Gotland Footmen, etc.) to charge in from the sides and kill anything that moves.

Heck with it, I just like the game.
But I never played the first Medieval, only the second, and the cavalry charges are pretty decent. Though when you set the difficulty to hard, things get rough, since you'll need to decently pin an enemy down before risking that, or they'll try to surround you.

Fun game though, fun game.
Did you try the mods yet? I love Crusaders and Teutonic, got tired of Britannia by now, and I don't really like the Americas (since you only get to play with Spain as a European power, and you can only expand your cities way too slowly).

But Teutonic Order, they have some awesome units.. Those uber infantry turn anything into mincemeat..

I havent really played the Total War games, but my brother (and by extension, me) has Rome, medieval 2, Empire, and Shogun 2. I like them, but having almost no idea what Im doing kind of detracts from my enjoyment of them. I dont even think I have Shogun installed atm, but Ill need to go check steam.

Feel like giving me some tips? :D

I suggest Denmark in Medieval II, or France (only went world domination with Denmark though), since they have a nice group of both strong infantry and cavalry at their disposal.

milan and the venice have one the most advanced and best armies but the drawback is that they start with only handfull off provinces

Depends how much you love cavalry if you ask me. And they don't have that many multi-role units, or very long ranged (like the French Avonturiers, or the English longbow units, or the heavier cavalry units)
That, and their starting positions are difficult to maintain once you get into power (at least to me), since everyone starts to attack you..

I normally go with England, because of their Armored Swordsmen, and powerful archers. I don't field much cavalry, because of the bad taste 1.0 left me. (Bugged charges)
