angelusprimus (02/09/2013) [-] Your philosophy teacher obviously has no actual knowledge of what happened. so I will give you a short history lesson. 1: This isn't about DOS, its about Mac OS and Windows, Graphic user interface. 2: Steve Jobs and Apple stole the entire idea, and technology from Xerox PARC, because Xerox allowed them complete access. 3: First Apple graphic user interface was on Apple Lisa, which was complete, if perfected, copy of Xerox Alto, the FIRST graphic user interface computer. 4: list of things Apple stole from Xerox: Computer-generated bitmap graphics; The Graphical user interface, featuring windows and icons, operated with a mouse; text editor; object oriented programming 5: To create windows Bill Gates made a similar deal with Xerox, windows stole the same ideas as Apple. 6: crediting Steve Jobs would be stupid because Jobs stole the same ideas. Jobs shamelessly stole those ideas, he thought good, and openly bragged about it. http://en . wikipedia . org/wiki/XeroxPARC http://en . wikipedia . org/wiki/XeroxAlto http://www . youtube . com/watch?v=CW0DUg63lqU These stories go back and forth. Your philosophy teacher teaches philosophy and not CIS 101 for a reason. They hold no more merit in the field than your grandmother does. Every single major tech company has either "stolen" or been had claims of thievery made against them. Gates created DOS in 1981 where as MacOS wasn't created until 1984. This isn't to say that Gates has never stolen anything nor am I suggesting he or Jobs were better than each other i'm simply saying this case is false. One fun example is that both Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates toured the Xerox facilities where they saw the "X, Y coordinating device" Now known as the mouse. They both proceeded to take the idea for their own. This actually happened. MacOS is a Unix based operating system that uses the C/C++ Language. DOS used "Fortran" which was re-written as CP/M. Windows (DOS Based) now uses C++ and C# but that isn't stolen as it was created by Dennis Ritchie in Bell Labs (AT&T) Really people can claim anything they like but without proof from a court it's all speculation and fan boy love/hate. Edit: Also please note Gates did not give IBM the DOS OS for free and in fact only gave them the ability to license it for a fee of $50,000. Gates did this because he knew that once the system was picked up by IBM it would also be picked up by every other company. It was gates "gateway" to increasing his customer base. #99

Mind you, I say functionality, kernel is completely different. Neither old macos nor windows were unix based, though now OsX (tenth mac os) is unix based. Unix not linux. | ||

| Interesting, my Philosophy teacher is a firm believer that Bill Gates stole ideas from Steve Jobs, and what he gave to IBM for free to try out was originally the work of Steve Jobs, and that he didn't credit Jobs at all. We got an hour lecture on how Bill Gates is evil and wrong and a thief. But I figured if I posted that comment on here I would get some different views and I would be able to compare them. #96
