Ignore anon below, he is partially correct in that many classes available are pointless or "easy A" classes, but that's because we select our classes, and most schools of any reputable stature offer courses such as economics, drafting, engineering, politics, etc., it's just the duty of the student to take the initiative and sign up for those classes instead of taking Culinary for 3 years and then bitch about how they never learned anything.

I'm from denmark and I visited a high school in america some months back. Had an english class with students maybe 2-3 years younger than me. I read english out loud better than 40% of them and just as good as the rest of them.
from what I've seen, their schools have some serious issues.

well then in my opinion thats partly the systems fault then...
"there are no bad students only bad teachers" I realize there is a fault in that quote because the student does have a responsibility but it works a lot of the way. there must be a problem if the schools are so undesirable to so many people.

Yes, America's public schools focus on the knowledge that the general populace will find completely useless. Other schools like to teach you things that you find you will use. You know some people who start off in public school and move to a private school later on have to go back several grades because the public school teaches so much less than the private and whereas they know everything they need to for 9th grade in a public school, in a private school they only have a 6th grade education.

Oh wow. Here they are complaining about teachers with low competence (more like not enough), and how students gets left behind.
I'm from a very small place, so the one about how students gets left behind doesn't apply much for here.
Some right-wing parties wants to break down the usual age-restricted classes and have classes based on school grades instead.
I disagree on this being positive, for the single child at least. It might get the common grade up, but it makes a distinction of intelligence, making it easy for the smarter kids to pick on the less fortunate.
"Hey John, why aren't you in the same class as your friends? Oh right, you're too stupid!"
The common ways of setting grades, by homework is also somehow "wrong", as it is not mainly based on the knowledge of the child, but how good he has been thaught, his ability to get his knowledge down on paper (dyslexia, adhd, etc.), and how able his parents are to help him at home.
Meanwhile, the left-side parties wants to remove exams and grades up to junior high/middle school (unsure which one would be the closest to our secondary school), while keeping the usual age-based classes.
This isn't really any better. As for now, the grades we aquire in secondary school are what counts when applying for a upper secondary course. (same age as high school I think? 16-18).
We have several different courses based on different roads in the future career, but all require a different grade to get into.
By removing exams and grades from secondary, there is nothing to push you to do better to get into the upper secondary of your choice.
