That's 813.95 a day, so my estimation was pretty close.

They have to be available to work 24 hours a day, every day. Even when they're not working, they're a surgeon. It's not a job you take off at the end of the day and put in the closet until you're ready to go back. And they don't get paid hourly, they get paid a salary to be a surgeon...all day every day. So in the time he was performing that surgery, he made about that much money being a surgeon. He would also have made the same amount of money being a surgeon who was not on duty but instead was out playing golf. But still, surgeons get paid a lot less than people think, especially when you consider the average medical student ends up paying over 300 thousand dollars in student debt.

They're not on call every day. That would mean they'd never be able to drink a beer or sleep without their beeper/phone off.
