I don't mind that he steps up to save people, but his motivation just seems fake to me. A lot of the other characters end up doing exactly the same as him, but with more reasonable motivations.

I never saw the anime, but I keep up with the manga. Almost every arc (except maybe the very first ones and the training part of the Herokiller arc) boils down to Doku doing something to save his friends at the cost of his own well being.

I just can't stand that type of character. It doesn't feel "real" at all. I'm not that big of a fan of the floating girl either, she's basically the same as Doku, but I can take it because she gets barely any screen time.

That's fair. I can understand why you feel that way. You do strike a point in that he does have to step in to save his friends; he -is- the Protagonist with the Stupidly OverpoweredPowerTM. after all.
