Well, I woke up like 5 minutes ago.
But I guess it's going well.
How's yours?
#222 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Ah, usually one's day is not going so well after only 5 minutes of being awake, but that's good to hear. Also I take it you are either a night shift worker or not in the US. My day went alright, lazy Sunday and all that. Soon I will have to sleep and brace for midterms.
User avatar
#223 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
Considering how much sleep I got, it's actually unusual.
And yeah, I'm from Northern Europe. Local time is currently 06:56 AM.

High school? College?
#224 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
I attend Oregon State University, the time here is currently 10:00 flat. How do you like Norther Europe? I'd imagine it is rapidly growing quite cold there. Nice to meet you by the way. I believe I've seen you around here before, your avatar is a dead giveaway I'm afraid.
User avatar
#225 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
Cool. What're you majoring in?

It's decent. Don't really have anything to compare it to. And yeah, I just (today) put on pants. Been wearing shorts since early spring. And the days are very rapidly getting shorter.

And yeah, the avatar does its job of fetching me attention.
#226 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Mechanical Engineering.

Yeah I suppose one could get acclimated to just about any weather. I don't have Celcius ingrained in me, but around here 50F is still tee shirt weather and it becomes truly cold below 20F. I hadn't really considered the length of day at higher latitudes factoring in, here about 5:30 at sundown is the shortest a day gets, although is seems much shorter with the overcast. Winter in Oregon is snow maybe and a guaranteed 3-5 months of grey skies and/or rain.

How about you? Are you in college or highschool, or have you already finished your education?
User avatar
#227 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
Awesome.

Yeah, I feel the same way about Fahrenheit. 0 degrees is freezing point, and this morning it was 3 degrees, so just above freezing.
Our "typical" weather is also grey skies with rain, and maybe 16 degrees.

I just started University (again), and am majoring in Robotics.
#230 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Well now it's my turn to have just woken up.

That sounds quite similar to here. 20F is well below freezing on the Fahrenheit scale, which is 32F, and 50f is about 10C. Today the sky decided to rain and it's currently 14C according to google.

That sounds like a kickass major. Are you interested in working on industrial robots, or are you hoping to become another pioneer in the field?
User avatar
#231 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
I honestly don't know. It's a growing field, so I imagine that there will be more career paths opening up as I continue my studies. I'll probably choose when I've completed a few years of this.
#232 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Fair enough. Robotics changes so much in so little time now. So did you just enter into the field blind, or are you simply opening your mind to many possibilities?
User avatar
#233 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
Well, I came from studying Sociology, and that was shit. So I figured something with math/physics, something where I could take a result and say "This is how it is, fuck your opinions"
Also, it's a new course. My year is the second year, so it's very new, which adds to the excitement.

#234 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Yeah, I'm my courses I know I'm getting into some fancy shit when the professor mentions that a technique was pioneered in the mid-late 20th century. With robotics, the knowledge could be less than a few years old. So are you approaching it from an electron/coding perspective, or are you more interested in the clever yet simple engineering solutions that are made to make various robots possible? I understand that robotics is quite the melding of both, but I would also imagine that one would have to claim a specialty and develop the other skill set as a supportive move.

#235 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
We actually asked one of the supervisors for textbooks, and he mentioned that there weren't that many, and even fewer up-to-date, so yeah. It's quite hard to find existing material.
As for the perspective, right now we're focusing exclusively on coding and sensing, but I know we're gonna have modules on actuators, motors, etc.
Like I said, I just started, so I only have ~2 months of experience, so I can't really tell what I'm going to specialize in.
However! I've been told by people in industry that what they need is people with programming skills, electronics knowledge and control capabilities. So it's probably going to be more focused on the electrical/software part of building robots, and less of the actual mechanical engineering.

But like you said, it's very much a mix of different engineering disciplines, so it's likely we're being educated to become project managers/overall designers, working together with other kinds of engineers that will do some of the more technical tasks, such as constructing the physical robot and making the electronic components.
#236 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Interesting. Well with a skill set like that it sounds like you have a very financially stable future ahead of you. I had a roommate freshman year who was in electrical engineering, and by god did they put him through the paces with those coding classes. On the engineering side it's vector calculus, ugly physics problems, and more vector calculus, so believe me you won't be missing out on much.

#237 - testaburger (10/19/2015) [-]
If I'm reading the current situation correctly, I can pretty much choose any job I want once I'm done. Local businesses are practically begging universities to produce more robotics engineers.

Well, we have linear algebra right now, and in the 2nd semester, we're going to have calculus. So we'll get our fair share of math, along with a heavy dose of programming. But I like it so far, so it shouldn't be a problem.
#238 - speedosnake (10/19/2015) [-]
Mechanical engineers seem to find a desk in most operations where something is being built, but my problem is that there are a whole bunch of us.

OK so yeah, they put you guys through the ropes. If you have yet to do any calculus, my word of advice is to learn algebra VERY carefully. It's funny how algebra is usually the math topic criticized with the old "when am I going to use this in real life?", when it is, in all honesty, the most important and easiest to screw up math subject that you will ever learn. Seriously, you can do most calculus operations in a few seconds in your head, but if and when a mistake is made, it will inevitably be with the algebra.

Our LinAlg lecturer is actually very good at relating the different things to things we're going to be using very soon, so there hasn't been any of that "what am I gonna use this for?" yet. He's very competent.

No, it's a pretty significant thing. Even most pretty fit women wouldn't be much strong than a lot of fat, lazy guys. Practically, the women are more useful because of better endurance due to training, but raw strength? The difference is pretty big.
Not saying that it doesn't happen, but it's not as though working out automatically makes you stronger than anyone who doesn't.

If you cant aim while ice skating or vice versa in hockey you arent going to do shit i would think, i could see a lot of kids being pretty bad at one if not both for a while when just starting off, whereas good teamwork can come naturally and be taught at a much earlier age. But you are right in the majority of cases most likely, but that just means that the team now has to have good teamwork skills to function. Brain always beats brawn unless brain fucked up big time or brawn does something very smart/lucky.
