Sub fees have definitely not ruined MMOs. The most successful MMOs have always had subscription fees, with very few exceptions. What ruined MMOs is that they've all tried to copy WoW. And since every game is trying to copy WoW, why not just play WoW? And at that point, people realize that WoW's gameplay, mechanics, and settings are becoming too dated, and they drop their sub.

I should have specified MMORPGs but the sub fee is bullshit and always has been, its only there so that the devs get paid, and while thats good it still puts a gate around communities.
i've never paid for one and im only going to be paying for Revivals gold servers when it comes out because there are going to be live DMs in game and thats worth. I dont care about the money a game makes i care about depth of the experience and player impact, and MMOs fail miserably in both of those categories. Why did i kill the giant ice bear when all of my friends already did it five-ten times each and already gave me a set of gear made from its hide? Why even rollplay when my character isnt able to do anything but fight and craft. And i have to pay fifteen to twenty bucks a month for a shallow experience like that? Bullshit, i get just as immersed in Vindictus as i did in WoW and EverQuest and only have to suffer not having sexy hair or underwear.
Also, "are becoming dated"? Man, the game was already dated when Cataclysm came out, but that doesnt even matter good games stay good at what they're good at for a long ass time, Morrowind played like shit when i came out but its story was and will be good. The only things that get old are graphics at which point they are just their own aethstetic and it doesnt matter unless you make it Or controls, which would be a problem for WoW if it didnt have super bland controls that take more spreadsheet skills to use effectively than actual skill in the game.
