the show itself pretty much encourages crossovers, due to having ponified versions of certain people/characters (lady gaga, doctor who, ermac, etc.)

people would ponify themselves, because hey it's fun to see what you might look like as a pony (and try to come up with what cutie mark you would have), and then they would do it with other characters as well.

I do it myself fairly often, mostly with stuff concerning Warhammer 40k, it's just really fun and enjoyable for me.
