I see this argument everywhere. Do you really know how much the oil income accounts for?
It's around 15%
#53 - traelos (09/18/2014) [-]
Yeah but that's a bigger deal than you think.
If you become independent your costs are going to go up too. And you're other revenue will go down because of how closely tied you are right now with England.
So if currently you're pulling in 10% more than you're spending, then next year you might only be making 5% more than you're spending, and in 30 years when the oil runs out it's basically impossible to say where you'll be, but I can say for sure that you'd have better chances throwing in with the massive population base that is England.
I won't say I know your finances that well, but I doubt the average Scotsman, Englishman or the average anyone really knows, and I feel the risk involved is being ignored/drowned out by 300 year old sentiment, and oil.

>If you become independent your costs are going to go up too
Maybe. But I agree with the theory that if we are keeping the money for ourselves and it's not getting mostly spent down south then we'll see the improvement.
>other revenue will go down because of how closely tied you are right now with England
Most of scotlands income comes from tourism and exportation. In terms of quantity we do very little trade with england in those regards. england has no recognised export
>30 years when the oil runs out
There's plenty of oil in the clyde that we can't get access to since the MOD have their subs there.
I agree that there is a lot of risk involved, we may go down the shitter but as far as I can tell we'll be better off. I know there's a lot of "stick it to the english" going on, but when a large chunk of the income is going to a foreign country without much return, it's better to split.

You see I wish you the best, but you seem to be a relatively informed person, and you don't sound too sure.
I'm just worried on your behalf that as a country you're rushing into a huge mistake for what is ultimately nothing. I mean there's no cultural oppression anymore and I just don't think it's worth the risk economically.
I dunno, it's just not the decision I would make and I like Scotland about as much as any foreign country so I don't want to see you guys get fucked.
#62 - anonymous (09/18/2014) [-]
Technically in terms of wealth we'd be the 17th richest country in the world. I honestly don't think we'd be able to screw up that badly. If we do get independence I can see the next 5 years being difficult, but nothing catastrophic.
I honestly hope that whatever is decided tomorrow was the best result for scotland.
#64 - traelos (09/19/2014) [-]
What you need to be concerned about in terms of wealth is GDP per person. You probably wouldn't go bankrupt, but you may very well lose a lot of the socialist policies you're ceding to gain in order to stay afloat. Or you would keep the policies and go bankrupt. Or you get bailed out by England and rejoin the U.K. and gain nothing.
Also seriously though, if you guys are so opposed to nukes what's your plan for a military? You're probably gonna have to make some serious concessions or spend a lot on your army if you want into NATO.
But we can certainly agree on that last point.
#65 - anonymous (09/19/2014) [-]
Personally I wouldn't even bother with a military.
I honestly don't see any country trying to invade, the only real current world threats are north korea and a few places in the middle east. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_military_and_paramilitary_personnel
As for nukes, there are plenty of countries without them and they get on fine.
#66 - traelos (09/19/2014) [-]
Ahaha, this is where I do have an ounce of knowledge.
NK is not a threat to anyone, except South Korea, and even then they're not a serious threat to their sovereignty, but they could push to Seoul very quickly before us Americans turn up and burn it to the ground, so they are a bit of an issue in that respect.
The middle east is only a threat to the middle east.
But what you need to be worried about are 2, maybe 3 things.
1) Russia. Putin wants to rebuild the U.S.S.R. and even though you're not a historical part of it given the chance he'll gladly go full Checnya/Ukraine on your ass. Without being in NATO or having a decent army you have less chance of protecting your sovereignty as the Ukraine. At least they had a sizable army.
2) England. 20 years from now they may decide they want you back, and im sure they can fabricate a casus belli.
3) This is the big one, Change. Just because you have no serious threats right now doesn't mean you won't in 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50 years. What happens if the Irish go full fascist, or if America decides to go full empire builder, or Scandinavia gets annexed by Russia? Without a nuclear deterrent/NATO you're literally relying on other countries not wanting to look bad by invading you and that's just not reliable.

The whole ukraine russian thing is an entirely different situation than a russia vs scotland issue, it's more of a civial problem than a "we want to invade you" problem.
England may want us back but it'll never happen by force. It's a different world over here than it is in russia/middle east.
Given that time frame once scotland has secured it's finances etc it can build it's army if it requires it (although I personally believe the whole thing is a waste of money). Stuff will change over time, but in the short term I don't see the need for one.
It's been a fun chat but I've got work in the morning so, good night!
#68 - traelos (09/19/2014) [-]
Hehe, don't be so naive. Putin wants a bigger Russia and is making it happen.
It's no more a civil issue than the Anschluss or annexation of Czechoslovakia was for Germany.
It's very hard to convince a nation to spend money on something they weren't before. And you may not know you need a military until it's too late. Don't trust what Sweden tells you, war isn't obsolete and it can happen to anyone at any time.

reason pc user score would be bad is because the keyboard mouse controls are so shit. People with controllers will have a great time, even I did because i re-mapped all of them like the Dark Souls 1 controls and I used only keyboard and not the mouse because where the bad optimization came was that the mouse reduced frames and was jumpy for whatever reason. Other than that it was perfect for me
#80 - grimsho (05/05/2014) [-]
It wasn't horrid, it was the exact same game as the console version, just get a controller. Almost every complaint about the PC version is about the keyboard controls for a game that was designed around using a controller. There's no way a keyboard and mouse would ever control the Souls series games smoothly or very effectively.
