I know your joking but I hate it when Americans claim to win the space race, you won the moon race. The Soviets won the space race, they sent the first satellite, man and robot into space, were the first to land a craft on another planet whereas America where the first on the moon. We haven't sent anyone to the moon in years whereas there are people in space constantly, robots permanently and satellites litter the upper echelons of our atmosphere. We still send space craft to other planets as well.
I am not denying that America has had an amazing contribution to space science but in terms of firsts, the Soviets were the first to do the most useful things in space. /rant.

That I don't know but after the Soviets came down Nasa slowed down a lot. It's a bit of a shame, the cold war was such a catalyst for progress in certain fields.

That's a matter of perspective. In the way I am explaining Americans are members of the community who are proud of what their police force (country) did. The people of their country (NASA) are the reason that criminal in in jail (man went to the moon) why shouldn't the community (americans) be happy that their local police force (their country) put a killer in jail?
