because it is perfect for crowd control.

if you were to buy one it would not have real weapons, but it still is able to fire plastic BB pellets and can be outfitted to fire water bottle rockets.

Smaller profile than a tank from both ground & air level.

A tank is easy to spot from say, a jet, you just look for a giant rectangle on the ground. This thing has a much different profile, and is smaller, so it would be smaller to spot from the air.

On the ground, it's smaller, and thus can maneuver into alleyways & such.

Right now it's more of a proof-of-concept rather than an actual tank replacement.

In the future however, mech-like tanks can be MUCH more versatile than tanks. Just think of a tank-like vehicle, that can walk up & down stairs, and inside buildings & such, it brings the firepower to a platform of much, much more flexibility.

Gandalf's visit to Dol Guldur is elaborated upon more in Lord of the Rings though, both in the council of Elrond and in the appendices. It's also implied during the Council of Elrond that Legolas was in mirkwood during the events of the hobbit (well, it could be interpreted that way).

Yeah the point isn't wether or not it was in the book, it's wether or not it SHOULD be in the movie. In this case: fuck no

LOTR had many deviations from the book that turned out great

Well when you watch an adaptation of a book, you expect the movie to at least make an attempt at following the events of the source material. With the romance, Azog, and Bard becoming a prominent character (in the book he was there for like, one page, and had no family), at this point you may as well say that it's "inspired by the Hobbit" rather than "based on the Hobbit".

Yes that is true - not disagreeing with you when it comes to the books and inspiration, but one thing that they added that was great was the parts with Sauron.

I'm pretty certain it's also not in the book.

With all due respect to such a great book, who cares if it isn't in the book:

If you watch a movie, you watch the movie, you "can't" sit picking at all the details, it's a movie not a book.
But the whole thing was just... so false and forced. And unlikely.
