No, it really is. What's not so simple however is finding an outlet.

People who cut or try to kill themselves use it as an outlet, a person cuts when the deep emotional pain they are going through is too much to take

Exactly, they use it as an outlet because they lack a proper one.
I would know that there is such a thing as a proper outlet, after all I am someone's emotional outlet. And in return, that person serves a similar role for me, being my outlet so that I don't get so frustrated that I start breaking stuff or get into fights. It's a rewarding relationship.

That knife is their outlet. That broken glass is what calms them. That mirror shard makes them forget everything they are feeling inside. I've watched it destroy some of my friends...trust me it's not as easy as saying "find a more productive outlet". It becomes an addiction, just like anything else in this world. They become dependent, feel like the need it. If you lost the person who you go to, you wouldn't know what to do with yourself. You can't just dump that emotional baggage on a random stranger, just like you can't stop cutting or self harming and find a new outlet. It's just not that simple.

As I said, what they need is simply a proper outlet, the task of finding it however is not simple.

And think about the time you need in order to know someone (as you do) in order for them to be an outlet. People going through some serious issues dont take the time to find someone like that. They need something instant. There will always be a knife, not always a listening ear.
