I just used an xacto knife and cut veeeeery carefully, and filed parts down with a nail file. Could be cleaner, but it works.

there are different products out there that you can use to repair models, its like a puddy substance and when you fill in the patches use a fine file to get the blemishes taken care of. You should be able to buy a set for not to much money.
