calibratuner (05/08/2013) [-] lol, no its a pudding. Been around for hundreds of years, before americans called chocolate pudding, pudding. look up yorkshire pudding if you want to. While I appreciate your implication that Americans invented chocolate pudding, the fact remains that the more custard-like dish has been around far longer than the alcoholic fruitcake that most English call "pudding". Anyways, in reality the word "pudding comes from a French word meaning "small sausage" (because for some reason early Europeans liked to put meat in desserts). Outside of the UK it almost exclusively refers to the creamy, milk-based dessert; wheras it can mean a range of sweet and savory dishes in the UK. I put this here not because I think that you do not know, calibratuner, but for the edification of others who might not understand that I was making a joke earlier. No. That would be like saying Chickens are actually dinosaurs because they evolved from them. Modern English evolved steadily from Old English, which was a collection ofAnglo-Saxon dialects dating around the 5th century. What we have today is a language that is only maybe 500-600 years old and, although it does have its roots, that does not mean that it is not a different language. English has mainly germanic roots and it evolved from there, the grammar and spelling comes from Anglo Saxons (old english etc.) and Latin. It was spoken in England from settlers moving there. The comment I replied to was saying that English people created the language which is false. Then, by your logic, it can not have been "invented" by the Anglo-Saxons, can it? Nor can it have been invented by the Germans, French, Romans or whoever the hell came before them. Everything has its roots, and, with that in mind, all languages are just developments of a pre-existing dialect. I never said it was invented because it was not, it evolved from early germanic language which was then edited with the grammar and spelling of Latin, French and some other languages to be what it is today. People just didn't start speaking english out of nowhere it evolved from many other languages. well you did say that it is West Germanic. It is not. It is English. If you can not easily tell the difference between Old English and Modern English then you might be the son of a god or something (just like in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief...you know? Where he starts reading Ancient Greek without realising?) It is a West Germanic Language, It is not actual german, though it has roots from german. Because it has major influences from west germany does not mean it is actual german. If I threw you off I apologize I did word that sentence kind of weird. #70

calibratuner (05/08/2013) [-] And yet you are trying to discredit a dialect, when the americans took our dialect and language and further changed it. So i ask you, what is your point. #91
-
calibratuner (05/09/2013) [-] I serve no purpose? You said the English did not invent the language, that may be true, but we did change the language to suit our purpose. So sort of we did invent the language, we invented the "dialect" of the language widely used. Then when the colonists moved to the America's they all spoke English, so they took 'originally' the British dialect and used it. However, as you should know, other cultures and nationalities mixed together in the melting pot of America, which surprise surprise, changed the dialect to multiple types of the americas. England invented the language that the americas built off of, yes it is an evolution. If you were going to say they didn't invent it and that was it, than you should have added that part. But you didn't, so you were implicating that the person defending the british language was wrong, even though he was not fully wrong. Yes, i would say it was more of an evolution of a language. I may have been irked last night, but my comment still stands, and yet you have not replied to my questions. #56
-
calibratuner (05/08/2013) [-] Technically you we created the full language we use, as you use our language. The american people DID in fact immigrate FROM britain. Like it or not, you are using our language, changed BY YOU. Ok? Are you trying to make a point about something? I've been learning history for 9 years, you don't surprise me... #69

calibratuner (05/08/2013) [-] You are awfully uneducated for being educated, that is my point. #92
-
calibratuner (05/09/2013) [-] Actually i did. As my post above stated, you were implying that the person defending the british language was wrong, yet he was not fully. So my point still stands. English has major roots in germanic language. The grammar and spelling comes from old english latin and french. | ||
