It seems like common sense to you, but you have to look at it from the perspective of the characters. The wildlings had literally been their sole foe for thousands of years. The White Walkers haven't been seen for about eight thousand years. Most people don't even remember they existed or believe they exist. The wildlings are an enemy that they've been conditioned to universally hate the entire time they've been at the Wall. Then this new Commander shows up who says, "Guys, guys! There's this new really big threat, so we have to team up with our most hated foes, to whom many of you have lost family members, and we need to let them through!" It would have been unrealistic if the Watch hadn't murdered Jon. It's not like human history isn't full of instances of humans of different races/cultural groups letting their blind multi-generational hatred for each other fuck themselves over.

I'm really wondering what's in store for winter. khaleesi spoke of breaking the wheel of family names and If they don't band together everyone's dead. I feel Jons death is a smaller scale of that, kinda seems everyones fucked because they couldn't settle their differences to destroy a common enemy. I realize that they've been foes for centurys but they're all gonna die now.

I think the big thing to take into account is that it really seems like most of the Watch doesn't truly realize how big of a threat they're facing. To us it seems like they just doomed themselves, but they don't even think they're doomed. Hell, most of the Watch have never even seen a White Walker or a Wight. I might be remembering incorrectly, but I think the only people who have and were still around were Jon and Samwell Tarly... neither of which were trusted by the traitorous members.

I agree, even if you don't like fighting with the enemy, most people will understand why. Him dying because people didn't like the wildlings was completely unrealistic and seemed like a forced event.
