da fuq man yo tried giving it depth without thinking on where the light would come from? hahaha >> depth is created from light << . about the artboard, that white thing behind the drawing, you made it right? because the artboart is the black border inside , you either resize the whole picture or change the size of the artboard, and when saving/exporting jpg check the Use Artboard box.

simple (linear and round) Gradients are innefective when shading complex shapes, a gradient mesh will work 1000 times better but its really hard to handle. so yes if you're not a pro with light/shades/shapes/gradient mesh work with colors, it' will make it look more cartoonish and i think would fit the fairytale environment of the drawing (if thats what youre trying to create.. if its something dark, use the gradients). the user DEATHFOSWIFTWINGS has a sweet style with flat colors, give it a look to his work

Thanks for the help, I just pretend to know what I am doing. I did kind of want a flat look, I dunno. As for the depth and light source, I was just thinking oh that looks cool while working with one specific section. I don't usually but Illustrator is one tricky bitch.

it'd be easier if you could send a screenshot ... about the picture, i think it'd be better/easier shading it with colors instead of gradients because it seems..dead (i cant find a word right now..sorry) also i dont know where the light is coming from, the things behind the nutcracker dont help with the composition, and be careful using textures, when you apply then a lot and so hard they saturate the picture ( try lowering some of them).

Here is the screenshot.

I plan on working with the background more, that's my rough-draft since I had no clue what to do for it. As for the lighting, I see how how it is messed up, I am not use to illustrator yet so I think I was more concerned on giving it depth then I was with where the lighting was coming from. So you think using flat colors as opposed to gradients would look better?
