The end of Earth's atmosphere however is at 33,000,000 ft (10000 km) but scientist agree that space begins waaaaaaaaaay before that (around 330,000 ft / 100km)
So the I guess the balloon reached the edge of space.

So, I assume you're a Canadian soldier, I've heard stories about how Canadian "rangers"(I don't know the actual specification) are some of the most badass mother fuckers in any combat situation, how true is this?
One story I heard was a Canadian beat the shit out of a veteran S.E.A.Ll.(both sober)

I'm not a Canadian Soldier, I'm in the Navy. But, The Canadian Forces basic training is for Air, Land, and Sea members, We are trained the same way. That picture was taken 2 weeks before my Graduation. Our soldiers are well trained, and excellent fighters. Our Special Forces (JTF2, CSOR) are among some of the best and most highly trained special forces teams in the world. I dont know if the story you say is true.. could be could not be you never know, as for being badass mother fuckers.. lol, we do what we can in a combat situation, we are very well trained.. I've never been in combat yet, so I'd have to get back to you on that.
