Had Chance the Rapper performance about 2 weeks ago on my campus. The people were the most ungrateful cunt of an audience, though. Kept throwing glowsticks onto the stage. He ended up getting frustrated and walking away at the end.

I hate rap completely

I assumed it was gangstarap by the fact that he was black.
User avatar #90 to #84 - sportsgif (04/22/2014) [-]
Why do you hate hip hop? Chance is far from gangsta, even someone who dislikes hip hop can listen in and realize he's far from it. Assuming that because he's black is incredibly ignorant.
User avatar #98 to #90 - fnoogernooger (04/22/2014) [-]
I wouldn't call his work far from gangsta. Mainly due to the vulgarities of the music. I decided to go to a random point of the album and I was greeted by the lyrics "mmm, ***** , damn ***** , twerk twerk twerk twerk" or something very similar. See, I'm a non-discriminatory disliker of hip hop. We have nearly a million words in the English language, why do we need to resort using only the same vulgar terms to elicit a response, be it positive or negative?
User avatar #106 to #98 - sportsgif (04/22/2014) [-]
That's hip hop culture for the new generation of hip hop. Is taking a break from this good? Of course - venturing out of genre-specific themes are great, when done correctly of course. Am I defending the themes of sex, wealth, and drugs? No, they don't bother me or annoy me - I listen to the overall picture that the track and album provide. Take "Cocoa Butter Kisses" for example. The song is about how he grew apart from his mother as an adolescent - its lyrics just have references to sex and drugs. Sometimes, those are just pawns in an overall message. Now, lyrics are only one aspect of hip hop, and in music in general. Is it fair to put down a whole track, artist, or genre based on one aspect? No it's not. His flow is great and the production is wonderful. He creates an energetic tone and delivery - you can tell how hungry he was to make it in the hip hop industry. He's a raw kid with raw talent. If you can't handle vulgarity in music, then I suggest you stop because it's present in all genres in one form or another. As for someone who listens to a lot of hip hop, I can tell you that he is far from gangsta rap. His upbringing shows no sign of gang-related activities or extreme family issues, which are common in rappers who are considered gangsta.

>> If you can't handle vulgarity in music, then I suggest you stop because it's present in all genres in one form or another.

I defy you to find me a vulgar European opera. Or a vulgar baroque piece. Or a vulgar 17th century Mass. Or a vulgar instrumental track. That's the kind of music I listen to. For me, the lyrics are the most important piece of any musical work of art. I'm not saying it's the only thing either. Maybe 40% Lyrics, 20% rhythms, 20% harmonic tone, 20% performance, just to throw some numbers out there. Now if the lyrics destroy a piece for me, at best the piece can get a 60%, which is not a passing grade.

In full disclosure, I'm not much of a fan of contemporary musical artists. The only modern artist that has really enraptured my mind was Daft Punk, and while they are current, they're also early 90's in France, which is behind the US/UK musically by about 10 years, so roughly the 80's musically for the rest of the world. The next most recent musical group that I am entranced by is Queen. Basically the same musical time period. Both have a reverence for classical music. In Daft Punk's work you can hear several influences in their use of repeated, shifting mode arpeggiations, and as for Queen, several members of the band were formally and classically trained musicians, which is quite evident by their baroque use of vocal harmonies.

Before them, not much. For me, music began a steady downward trend at the end of the Late Baroque Era.
User avatar #169 to #134 - sportsgif (04/22/2014) [-]
I should have said "vulgarity in music in the modern era." I don't have much of an argument as I've only touched the surface on pre 1900s music such as your basic composers. I do like Daft Punk though. Idk man, if your kind of music is mostly instrumental, then I guess that's that. It is nice to have broader horizons but if that's what floats your boat, so be it. You should check out the post rock genre if you like instrumentals. Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor are good starting points for it.

Seriously though, if you see a musician you're a fan of out and about, don't be an awkward **** . Famous people are people. Had a bunch of interesting conversations just by walking up to someone I recognised and saying 'Hello, I'm a fan of your work.' Don't ask for a picture, or an autograph, just strike up a conversation. They'll appreciate it.
