so, I played all the pkmn games up to heart gold.
How does this whole mega evolution thing work?
Would someone mind explaining it to me? I'm curious.
Is it just like a new evolution stage, but instead of giving it a new species name, they just slap a MEGA in front of its name? Or is there more to it than that? Is it permanent? Can all pokemon mega evolve?

You tap something before your turn turning your Pokemon beast mode.

The only limits are it takes up an item slot and you can only mega-evolve 1 Pokemon per battle (So for someone like me who has Mega Gardevoir and Mega Charizard, i could only mega evolve one of those two).

It's very very powerful but it can also be frustrating at times. With different stats and sometimes different typing or abilities, your pokemon might have a different role. For example, Mega Heracross has Skill Link (Makes all multi-hitting moves hit 5 times) so moves like Rock Blast are amazing for Mega Heracross but largely useless for regular Heracross.

Or Mega Gyarados is Water/Dark and has Mold Breaker instead of Water/Flying with Intimidate. Mega Mewtwo X is Psychic/Fighting and has AMAZING attack so you'd need to give him physical attacks instead of special like you would a regular Mewtwo

I see, so if you invest moves that would benefit the mega evolution stage, you limit their move pool, because they will typically be useless for their pre-mega stage.

It varies. Gengar, Alakazam, and Scizor for example would run the same moves either way. Charizard's moves would depend on whether you were using Mega Charizard X or Mega Charizard Y With X it's better to use physical moves and Y it's better to use special and to get the most out of Mega Blastoise, you need to breed it It's ability boosts moves with Pulse or Aura (Water Pulse, Dragon Pulse, Dark Pulse, Heal Pulse, and Aura Sphere) by 50% .

As I understand it:
With a special stone item that is not consumed after use.
No.
Yes, it massively ups their stats for the battle.
No.
No, but Charizard and Mewtwo get 2 different versions for some reason.

All of them get 100 more in their base stat total with the exception of Mega Alakazam getting 90 more

And their stats are also redistributed a bit differently for some and makes it seem like they got 2134080932412350923 more added to their more important stats when its just stripping of the lesser necessary ones and adding to the better ones

Health is never adjusted, tho

It's basically OP ****. You can mega evolve at the start of battle, it doesn't take a turn, and you get buffs out the ass

There's one. The pokeyman can't hold an item.

That's why you gotta keep your teams varied with counters that can apply to most other teams and a mega pokemon of your own to even things up

and also Garchomp actually loses speed upon mega evolving
It goes from 102 down to 92, minor, but could mess with the battle flow a bit

The downside is that you can only have one Mega on your team. Gen 6 was designed so that every team would have a Mega. I don't get your point.

Outside of Mega Kanga, Gengar, and Blaziken they're not horrible. Lucario is pretty ******* rough but the rest are fine.

At some point in the game, you get an item called a Mega Ring. What this allows is for certain Pokemon to Mega Evolve. Only a certain number of Pokemon can actually Mega Evolve, and they need to be holding a Mega Stone. For example, Lucario needs to hold Lucarionite. During the battle, there will be a Mega Evolve button, and then you can also attack. The Mega Evolution occurs and then the turn begins. Only one Pokemon can Mega Evolve during battle, so if your Mega Evolved Pokemon faints, you can't Mega Evolve again for the rest of the battle, even if revived.

It's basically a temporary evolution for the Pokemon, and they revert back to their original form after the battle. Their stats will increase and they can also get new abilities, such as Mega Charizard Y having Drought. I hope this helps!
