The USA and UK have an obligation to defend Ukraine's territorial integrity due to a 1994 nuclear disarmament agreement. So if Russia does try to annex more of Ukraine (which they probably wont, I hope) then there has to be retaliation.

I don't think it's their intention, they only landed a 6,000 infantry and 100 odd helicopter strong task force to protect Sevastopol. But fully mobilised, Russia could ruin Ukraine, their entire black sea fleet would shell their cities to oblivion from the south, and their mechanised forces could roll in from Belarus in the north and Russia to the East. Not to mention that Ukraine has a very small military and a lot of Ukranians are loyal to Russia.

It's technically an invasion because their troops are in foreign territory and the USA and UK are obligated to protect Ukraine by a 1994 nuclear disarmament agreement, so unless Russia steps down and leaves, the USA and UK technically have to fight Russia out. So everyone is ******** their pants about what will actually happen. I think they'll agree that Russia will leave once the political situation has stabilized.

No, Ukraine has been independent since the collapse of the soviet union, but they historically have a large Russian population in the south. They also have their second largest fleet and only naval window to Europe based there, so under the pretext of 'protecting russian citizens' (only 50% of the population there is actually russian) they've landed a task force of 6,000 troops at their naval base and surrounding areas to protect it from the Ukranian rebels.

Yeah, but now we have far more advanced technology than the Nazis had. They could just bombard the **** out of you. I know if I was going to lead a war on Europe, I'd open up on Britain and set up a base of operations there. They've been able to hold out so well whenever an empire conquers all of the mainland first, but when they're the first target not so much.

I have a feeling if Russia launched their initial attack on Britain, they'd be in a much better place to have the peace treaty under their terms.

this is discounting the fact that any bombardment of Britain by the Russians would be met with an equal bombardment from Britain, and considering Britain has air force and naval bases much closer to Russia (Malta) than Vice Versa, and that the British have more advanced missle defence systems than Russia, and Russia would have to fly over enemy territory initially whereas the British would not, actually on paper Britain would have a far easier time bombing Russia than the other way around.

That's why you open up on them, before hostilities are to the point of shoot on site. For example, London is just a hop and a skip away from Russia's borders, Southern England in general being bombed a bit would make Britain uneasy, and having London specifically bombed (heavily) would really knock a lot of spirit out of Britain. Russia may have less of a grudge, but if I was going to start a war with all of Europe, I'd open up on Britain and have my navy capable of bombarding several key cities.

Except for the fact that their technology and military strategy is 100x better than yours. If they entered, they most likely wouldn't set up in the city. If they did, it would be cleared block by block making sure there is no resistance. They'd take a good, big building, like city hall or a bank, and base there. You'd be lucky to get anyone inside. Any resistance would probably be met with deadly force, and they'd for sure make it felt by cutting off food and water. This is assuming they don't just come in and roll over you

(Do you really think no one would see it coming and the rest of EU would not flip ****. ) and yes, Russia got atomic bombs but well, so does many other countries that are allied to the Scandinavians. srsly i think Sweden is the only one who is not in NATO and well. Sweden is one of the worlds top provider of wep so i dont really think that the sovjet union, the russian diktatorship, would be that much better epuiped. Besides, what would russia live on when they declared war on the world? America is probly the only sperpower that could sustain itself in times of war. russia would become more poor that before. You have literally nothing to stop the Russians.
You haven't been vikings for over 2 millennium.
You're not going to invade anything.
Best you'll be able to do is to just let them come straight into your country without any opposition (Because letting the invaders in unopposed is the best strategy ever, truly a testament to the Scandinavian military intellect.) then get slaughtered as soon as they're met with any form of resistance, then go crying to America for help while still thinking you're better than them.

It would be the equivalent of Andre The Giant kicking a midget in the balls and then holding him at arms length while he flails away, hitting nothing.

there are many ways this can turn out, so for all we know, neither of us is right.

The current Ukraine government isn't to be taken seriously after the president fled.

The current leader who took over is Oleksandr Turchynov who is from the All-Ukraine Union "Fatherland" who has 88 of 450 seats in the parliament which are only a 1/5 of the seats and only 11% voted for his party which is still to less to be in power of a nation.

The current government doesn't represent the people and is no way legitimate. Ukraine soldiers are joining the Russians in masses the Ukraine navy chef swore allegiance to Crimea meaning the government has no navy.

Crimea is a semi-autonomous region in Ukraine with a majority of Ethnic Russians. The head of state of the region requested Russia to mobilize the troops they already had in the region by seizing control of both of the regions major airports, seaports, and government buildings in order to safeguard the region and maintain order. The rest of Ukraine who are mostly Pro-EU are calling it an invasion and are crying for International intervention from NATO/EU. No one wants this to come to violence.

Ukraine is split between Pro-EU and pro-Russians, and the place Russia invaded (Crimea) was filled with like 90% Russians, so they're being welcomed with open arms. Russia has illegally sent thousands of unmarked troops and vehicles to Crimea (the southern part of the Ukraine that has a Russian naval base).

The Pro-EU Ukrainians want NATO to help them oust the Russians and protect them.

The Pro-Russians want Russia to invade and make the country and part of the Federation.

Europe wants the US to do something.

US doesn't really want to get involved.

We probably will eventually, but long enough down the road for Europe to scream at us for taking so long.

If we don't get directly involved this could lead to another cold war.

If we do, it could lead to WWIII.

If no one helps then millions of people could end up living under Russian law and oppression that don't want it.

This is my best understanding of the situation. Please if anyone wants to correct me, do it calmly and explain exactly what/why I was wrong.

Europe is in a headlock right now, because most of its countries depend on Russian gas. There is no logical solution anymore for Europe. Ukraine is not a NATO member and NATO has no reason to engage its troops. Obama will not use any military measures because of political reasons.

To complicate things to the maximum, after the USSR broke apart, Ukraine signed an agreement by which it gave away leftover USSR nuclear weapons (estimated on 1/3 of all USSR nuclear weapons) and USA+UK guaranteed Ukraine its integrity.

What happens next? I hope a peaceful agreement, because if nukes start flying, I live too close to be comfortable...

There is a bit more meat on the bones than that, from what i gather.

America has the largest military in the world, followed swiftly by Russia (one of the many sauces confirming this: www.businessinsider.com/10-most-powerful-militaries-in-the-world-2013-6?op=1 )

Ukraine has been Russia's bitch for a long time now, thanks to a pro-Russian party leader at the helm of the government (Sergiy Aksyonov). Effectively, Ukraine became just another part of Russia. Russia got a lot from this relationship, among them energy (Russia is the major provider of energy to the EU) and co-operative military operations. Ukraine also has a lot of natural resources as well as a strategic interest as a country located next to the Black Sea. It's military is also a force to be reckoned; being a former part of the USSR it has a lot of undocumented firepower that many countries would be jealous of (though not more than America or Russia).

Now recently, Pro-EU sentiment has risen in Ukraine, to the point of violence, leading to Sergiy abandoning his role as head of the country. To hold the power vacuum, a pro-EU committee was formed in Ukraine to govern it until the government stabilized. However, there are still many Pro-Russians in Ukraine (specifically Crimea), leading to a power struggle in the country.

Putin wants to take advantage of this. If he "offers help" to Pro-Russian Ukrainians i.e. give em some tanks and blow the opposition harder than phanact blows admin (no ban, pls), then the Pro-Russians will take over Ukraine, and create an even stronger link between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine would give a lot more stuff to Russia.

The economic boom that Russia would get would make even the Germans jealous, but the thing that everyone is so concerned about, is if Ukraine gives military power to Russia.

If Ukraine's military is absorbed into Russia, Russia will have the strongest army in the world, ahead of America.

You were correct up till the last part. Ukraine's military is so small they can't even oust the men in Crimea if they wanted to. They only have one squadron of Su-27s last I checked, they have no large standing forces of tanks, and their numbers are too few to matter.

That's why the whole European Union wants America to get involved with this. No-one wants to see Russia become more powerful than America- if that happened, World War Three is a possibility, which is why so many people are going on about it.

But in reality, Putin is severely underestimating the pro-EU Ukrainians and the support they're getting from the EU and America. America is one of the few countries that Russia has to respect the opinion of (again, due to military), so if the EU can get America to step in and say "Don't go in there. You don't want to go in there" Putin may think twice

Putin still won't give up Ukraine that easily though. It's simply too valuable to Russia to let go of to some Pro-EU supporters. If it gave Ukraine up, Russia's economy would be crippled, and it's government would soon follow suit.

Eh I'd probably add that there is a 3rd faction of nationalist Ukranians who want neither Russian ties or the EU. Or so I hear.

I'd dispute the fact that Europe wants to do something and the US doesn't if anything it sounds like the opposite. Probably the reason why our top European diplomat got caught saying "**** the EU."

www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/07/angela-merkel-victoria-nuland-eu-unacceptable

It seems the EU doesn't want to do anything, especially piss off russia.

I also object to the depiction of Russian oppression, not because they won't be oppressed or because I'm pro-Russia. (I hope all of Ukraine joins the West, or EU), but because it implies that there isn't oppression on the EU side of things too.

No matter what Ukraine chooses it is ******.

I think you got it mostly right, though it's worth pointing out that Crimea also contains a large part/most of the Ukranian economy, what with its ports and industry.

Also, I doubt the US will really get involved at any point, seeing as nobody really wants to fight Russia, especially since the area's population is, as you said, largely Russian, so there is some validity to their actions, and to put it bluntly: Nobody really cares that much about the Ukraine. Certainly not enough to risk World War Three.

Well nobody really cared that much about Serbia or Poland, but when they got invaded by a major European power it kicked off the first two. It's not so much that anybody cares what happens to the Ukraine, but people do care about Russia's actions and fear what it may indicate about their future plans.

For the past 5 years, many of the Arab states have been in revolt and now much of Eastern Europe looks like it'll be going that way too. At any point like this there's going to be a lot of back-alley alliances building up. Each party needs protection and sponsorship from a major power so they look to the EU/NATO or Russia for help, both of which will make their demands to bring the weaker states closer into their respective folds. This will increase their immediate security, but it sows tension in the long-run.

Right now it looks very similar to the situations that precipitated the prior World Wars. We've got widespread political instability (Arab Spring revolutions, Eastern European protests), clear party lines drawn (EU/NATO vs Russian Federation) with smaller states looking to them for support, and a clear act of aggression by a major power (Russian intervention in Crimea). I can't say for certain that it will lead to greater conflict and I sure as **** hope it doesn't, but right now all the pieces are in place for something to kick off.

Officially, they'd side with the Russian Federation.

Historically, China sides with Russia and against Japan. Japan, though they don't have a standing army, would certainly support the NATO side I think it would be more accurate to call the NATO side the International Alliance. It seems to me that Russia and it's allies are more focused on their own interior issues, while the IA as I'm calling it is more focused on creating a border-less world where we are all citizens of Earth (of course this is a highly hyperbolic statement, but I think you get the picture). , especially since they are entirely reliant on the US for all forms of military protection. Though China is rapidly Westernizing (for lack of a better word), their ideology is still much more in line with the Russian Federation than the EU's.

Unofficially, that may be a meaningless gesture.

Historically, China has been an isolationist country. They are completely capable of self-sufficiency and have no reason to get involved. The US is about the only other country that has this luxury, which is why we are also slow to get involved in European power struggles. It doesn't directly affect either of us. Neither of us wants to get involved in somebody else's conflict. Furthermore, China is also a country in transition and I don't know what public sentiment is. Despite having a massive standing army, they may be reluctant to use it to it's full potential. The last time they got involved they were too busy with their own internal issues that they could only field a defensive force, their offensive capabilities were practically null. They're still very closed-off so it's hard to tell, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is enough internal disagreement to prevent them from entering with full-scale war capabilities.

The first world war had been brewing for a while - all that was needed was an excuse.

The assassination was reason enough for Austria to declare war on Serbia, which was reason for Serbia to call its ally Russia, which was reason enough for Austria to call in Germany, and then it had snowballed into a world war.

No, the only risk of a third world war would be if the US or Europe actually responded, which I doubt, mainly because Ukraine is not a very important country, and the western powers know this.

Yea, I know Roosevelt established us as a world leader, but I think there are some situations where we need to just give our input and then be done with. There's no need to go into every backwater country in the world just to make sure they don't kill each other. All we should do is say "we disagree with this, someone should do something about it" and be done because when we were established as a world leader, we had way less **** going on at home.

Even China needs to separate it into a bureaucracy. Not only that, but they need to let certain areas like Hong Kong and Shanghai govern themselves as autonomous zones because they have no idea what the **** to do with them and they know that if they tried to govern them, they'd just **** it up.

A council is the most fair way... it would be a *********** but the opinions of all need to be listened to prior to making decision which best improve on a situation. A more powerful UN would probably be decent for the world, but everyone is concerned for their sovereignty... Noting as a council & bureaucracy capable of making & implementing major decision necessitates uncomfortable levels of centralization...

No, no, no. Look, I know your idea of "one big unified government" sounds good on paper, but just look at the world and ask yourself if that could actually happen. The extreme divergence in culture, language, and social norms already ***** the idea of a global government up the ass, but don't forget the fact that we already have something that tries to be a sort of global governing system called the U.N. and it's garbage.

Aside from this, imagine trying to balance the economy when it almost relies on the divergence in the value of currency. What would you do, make everyone use the same currency and ruin the global economy? We'd have to switch back to the ******* barter system.

Oh, and don't get me started on laws. How the **** do you set laws when cultural problems get in the way at every turn?

There can be no global government. There'd be fighting and grabs for power, nobody would get along, nobody would want to agree on a specific language, there would be riots and rebellion, taxes would be a ******* nightmare to work on- I could come up with a list longer than your mother's tits sag.

Okay, Yuu is being a bit of an asshat about this, but he has a very good point. The practical problems which arise from the idea of a global government are both vast and severe in nature, ranging from cultural differences and religious complications that it would involve all the way to more basic issues like "Huge country A joins the union. Do they have the same amount of power as tiny country B?". The politics and economics of it are head-ache worthy, and there is little to no doubt you'd have to use some kind of method to suppress the population, hiding them from any thoughts which might lead to the deviation from the norm. The fact of the matter is that while cultural differences can be a great thing, too much leads to trouble. Look at the stabbings in China from an Islamist group, do they want to unify with the Christians and Jews and Atheists?

What of the KKK, the Black Panthers? The nationalistic neanderthals of every nation? Do you believe we can have a unified world while they exist? The largest issue with the idea of global union, not even taking into account how difficult it would be to run, is that with such diversity and division in our modern world it would be almost impossible to establish in the first place. Unify implies a peaceful joining, and that just won't happen.

Now, if you were to conquer the world and establish peace through that way, brain wash your population for a few generations until the idea of countries is bred out of them? Well, then you could have a global government, I guess. Either that or get a common enemy, but I have yet to see aliens come down.

My point is, it's a sweet idea, a nice idea, but what yuuko is trying to tell you is that it's impractical in reality to the point of impossibility.
