Don't think of it as money you are not getting but instead a bill you pay for things you use every day

Living in Somalia seems like a great alternative.

Somalians are a bunch of retards.

Amish would be a good example of a functioning society without tax/currency. But it's not entirely efficient and it's definitely not scalable.

What percent of your tax money do you think actually comes back to help you? So much of it goes to military and obscure government programs that are as useful as constructing nature trails in Antartica. The only real useful government programs are road upkeep, natural upkeeping (like Yellowstone), law enforcement, and education. There's probably a few others, but so much is wasted on foolish experiments, like Welfare. The worst is money that goes into government bailouts and business stimulants and general sales tax. If we just took that money out of the tax equation it would be much more helpful (allow them to save money on gathering raw materials, selling to retailers, and it would allow them to sell for slightly lower prices and raise employee salary, helping to increase sales and boost productivity in other market sectors).

tl;dr: Tax money paying for programs that people need done and wouldn't do by themselves = good
Tax money that pays for lazy asses or general stupidity like this: www.informationliberation.com/?id=38663 = bad

A lot of the "stupid things" from that list aren't really that stupid. Research on video games and children in the classroom can tell us a lot about human psychology. Research on methane gas emissions can help us with the environment quite a bit. I haven't gone through the whole list, but a lot of the information is useful to the development of scientific knowledge. To me, that's money well spent.

This isn't even that accurate, most checks have a variety of amounts.

"Here's what you worked for, here's what we took, here's how much each thing we took from your check cost, here's what a random coworker made, and here's what we're giving you."

It's like some ****** up scavenger hunt......
