This is why I disagree with celebrating anything family related in school; there's always going to be that one kid who doesn't have *that* family member; be it mother, father, granparents, siblings, or even a biological family.
If it isn't bad enough that it's rubbed in their face because they can't take part in an activity, chances are the whole class will find out what the child is missing.

No, not "neer mention it", but not parade it in front of him.
And if a child has same-sex parents, chances are they'll be challenged on it through life anyway, it doesn't need the teacher actually arming people against him.

The vast majority of people do not have a great-great-grandmother. Teacher make the assumption that all kids in class has a mother and a father.
That is the problem.

i remember beign a kid and beign sad as **** on father's day because they made me make presents for someone who wasn't there and everyone else was so dandy and happy
