This is a load of ********.
Hunts like this are run by conservation groups and wildlife preserves. They are perfectly legal, and the hunter pays a large amount of money that goes to conservation for the right to hunt.
After paying, the hunter is told of a specific individual they can hunt, almost always, as was the case here, an an old and no longer fertile male. In the case of lions, even though the male is infertile, he will still attempt to mate with the lionesses, although unsuccessfully. This keeps younger lions from mating, and keeps the females from having offspring. If she or no one else paid to hunt this individual, they would have paid someone to go out and do it. Doing this expands the viable individuals in the population, and provides funding to the conservationists.
TL;DR, It was an infertile male that she paid thousands of dollars to conservation to hunt, and they would have paid someone to kill it if she hadn't. Also, all meat was donated to a local village.

A lot of people haven't crushed a kitten's head with their bare hands either, but that's not cool.

By Dude I Replied To's own admittance, it was a weak old thing that was basically just going to sit there. Sure, it was preventing the growth of the pride, yadda yadda, I can understand the rationale behind killing him. But it still required virtually no skill and I have a hard time imagining why anyone would enjoy shooting a defenceless old big cat.

it's not really defenseless, it just chooses to be because it generally doesn't have any threats. Animals that realize people aren't allowed to hurt them become a big problem, especially near civilizations.
It's not something amazing, but it's something interesting. Crushing a kitten is unnecessary. But this is necessary, so someone might as well do it. I can't really say for sure, I've never hunted anything (unless fish count), so I don't know what it'd be like to pull the trigger. However, hunting is generally not against things that put up a defense, so this wouldn't be that much different. You don't chase a deer down with a knife, you sit in a tree for hours and wait for it to come in range, then shoot it in the head. The difference is that less people have done that with a lion. And lion meat probably isn't as tasty

Natural order! Maybe the young lion shouldn't be able to breed if he can't beat the OLD infertile male. The lion that can beat the OLD lion will likely have the best genes to pass on.

I don't believe his objection was to her killing the lion. Merely that she tried to act all macho and make out like she took on the king of the jungle (misnomer I know, using out-dated incorrect slang to highlight the ********) single-handed and won. In fact your information proves the poster's point (that she's kind of being an ass) even more. Instead of highlighting a responsible hunting program that sounds like it's doing a lot of good, she instead decided to brag about what an incredible hunter she is in a situation in which she was in complete control and what sounds like she was at no risk.

TL;DR It's not the lion killing, it's that fact that she thinks she's a badass when it was probably a totally controlled situation and lions are really ******* easy to hunt.

If I had the money to go and do what she did I'd ******* brag about it. You're hunting a Lion. I mean do people really want people who can legally hunt Lions to hunt them during the time when they're the most active which is at night? And calling it cowardly is also pretty ******* stupid. She used a gun and there's tribes in africa that use spears and swords so I guess the use of a gun in general is cowardly. All this is is a non issue where a bunch of opinionated ***** think they are entitled to judge.

Lions are not ******* easy to hunt. This story is doing the same thing every story does, take a leading edge and expand on it. There are quite a few documentaries about the dangers of lions and I can't remember the name of one particular documentary where a pair of lions were dubbed "man-eaters" during the 1900s because preyed massively upon workers in Tsavo region, also there was another documented case of a pride of lions claiming the lives of over 1500 humans in Tanzania.

Lions are not very active during the heat of the day, so yeah sure they are all cute and cuddly and kind when they are warm, but if they perceive you as a threat or it becomes time for them to hunt, let's just see how long you stand around like an idiot with a camera.

Hunting for survival is the same as hunting for sport.. Yeah. Good argument there buddy.

Animals aren't as intelligent as we are. They kill each other because they need to survive and don't know any better.

We sure as hell do. You can try to rationalize it however you want, but the fact is that killing living things for the fun of it is sick and honestly, disturbing. If it's so "natural" then why is murder illegal? And yes, IT IS murder to kill an animal, why? Because you're killing a living thing.

If someone wants to hunt it should be apart of something that is necessary, like conserving populations to present starvation and over predation or simply protect live stock and people. Senseless killing of animals is disgusting.

No, we don't need the meat or pelts but it is more humane to shoot and kill them than to have large populations die of starvation.

But for the sake of playing devil's advocate.
Is it unsportsmanlike ? Sure. But I mean come on. If you really wanna pull that card then I guess we're all only allowed to hunt animals that can actively hunt us back.
I guess its also unsportsmanlike to keep cows in pens and slaughter them for meat, because they didn't have a fighting chance.
Oh wait, no one talks about that,
But the moment an animal you like is danger. Stop the ****** presses. Everybody jump on the bandwagon, and tell us all how you have always been an advocate for Lion rights.

See other comments. Food industry is disgusting, the way we treat meat cows is disgusting, but there's still a damn good reason for it - to give us food. No one kills lions to eat them. They kill them to make trophies out of them. Huge difference.

Moral of the story.
Why do people give a **** about one animal and not the other?
We hang cow skulls on cars and barns and walls. Where is the moral outrage?
Why do lions get the special treatment. People think that just because they like lions that it's wrong to kill them?
People have been trophy hunting for thousands of years. This is not a new thing.

Do I agree with it? No. I think its stupid. Not because I like lions but because it takes the fun out of hunting. What makes me mad is that the second someone makes a tumblr post about how some ******** went and shot a lion. Suddenly its a war crime.

Trophy hunting may have been going on for a long time, but so did slavery. just because it has a lot of history doesnt mean we have to let it continue. I never got how trophy hunting could be a sport anyway; wheres the challenge in using your telescopic rifle to shoot something that has no idea you are there from hundreds of meters away? If you want a challenge go hunt animals with a spear and sharp rock.

First off, most of the people here are probably quite against trophy hunting in general. But, second off, this particular women was acting like she was big and bad for hunting down a lion.

So, she's managed to do something that should (basically) offend everybody: Sport hunters are offended because she's playing it off as an achievement when it's actually easy and cowardly, and those AGAINST sport hunting are pissed off because of all those reasons PLUS the fact that she's hunting for sport in the first place.

That's why more people are offended at this then at regular sport hunting. Even if you're OKAY with sport hunting, acting tough because you killed a lion is pathetic. If you're AGAINST sport hunting, it's pathetic *and* immoral.

Well everyone gives a **** about polar bears, but the same logic is behind it, you only give a **** about it dying because it's pretty. Also no one claims to have "hunted" a cow, so it's not really a comparable argument. And hunting isn't about the animal's ability to "fight back" so much as it's about the animal's ability to just leave. Deer are a hard kill, lions aren't.
tldr
Your argument is ****.

Those are some really cool pics. HOWEVER there are a few holes with YOUR argument.

Hunting raises more money for conservation then anything else for african game reserves. (Legal) hunting is all about picking out the few to help the majority. You have to pay several hundred dollars to shoot any animal, plus high prices for equipment, this is all so that the money can go into protecting those animas which are not hunted.

You can;t jsut walk in with a gun and shoot whatever one you want, they have to be picked out for you so that it won't effect the overall balance of animals and won't lower the birthrate in anyway. Whilst also giveing a great experience for the hunter.

She probably DID stalk them, got out of the van and hunted, but had the van and a few people to hel pjsut in case, that's only safe and smart.

TLR - HUNTING = money for onservation

No, but his point is that hunting, while arguably cowardly, does not actually HURT lion conservation efforts *anymore*. Mass-hunting of food sources, loss of habitat, and retaliation killing are what made them endangered, hunting has barely had an effect on them comparatively.

And, technically, 'nature' has had no problems making animals go extinct long before we ever got here; conservation is as 'unnatural' as anything else, even if we're the ones at fault for thinning their numbers in the first place. We 'conserve' animals (barring vegans) either because they're beneficial to OUR chunk of the ecosystem or because we find them beautiful and want to preserve that beauty.

I think Roosevelt can get away with it, seeing as how lions were relatively populous and the times in which Roosevelt lived in was very pro-hunting, one hundred years ago he and other trophy hunters would be adventurers extraordinaire!!. You cant get away with that nowadays, what with dwindling numbers of endangered species and conservatism, today Michelle and trophy hunters are known now as sociopathic egotistical scum

You can call it double standards, but there's a reason why we keep things in the past. You should never appeal to historical taboo's or past cultural aspects to prove a point. If you did the reverse and put historical figures in a present day context, then for example you have Winston Churchill, the racist imperialist.

Somehow, I don't think you'd be defending her if she looked like Kathy Bates. I'm calling *********, and claim you are defending her tits instead of her actions.

Lions are listed under Vunerable species which means they are close to becoming endangered. If there is population control it should strictly be done by DNR. By glorifying the hunting of rare animals, even if it's legally done, it encourages poachers to continue hunting them.

Also, Teddy Roosevelt hunted in a different time period, before people realized the excessive hunting humans were doing at the time was causing species to become extinct. The animals he hunted were also not yet endangered in his time.

Also, scoping lions with a high-power rifle in the confines of a reserve takes very little skill and does not seem very sportsmanlike-- she's guaranteed to get one. So I dunno what she's bragging about.
