Somehow, I can't imagine he's the first person in recorded history to correct someone's spelling. Not that an obscure, unimportant tidbit like that would be easily searchable, but I just somehow doubt 1790 is the first time anyone ever went on record saying, "Yo, you spelled that wrong."
