My dad caught one off the coast of Norway back in the 80s.
But that was a "small" one and it only tipped the scale at about 110Kgs which is about 230lbs.The locals referred to them as "the sleepy/lazy one" because they swim very slowly, and the make very little resistance when you catch them.

Here are some facts about them.

The can live down to extreme depths of down to over 2 kilometers and have a natural anti-freeze in their blood.
Because they have anti-freeze in their blood you can't eat them without fermenting them for weeks. The result is known in Iceland as hákarl and is said to be one of the most vile foods on the planet.

They have huge livers that contain equally huge amounts of a very fine oil, which was used to lubricate machinery before modern oils were commonly used.

They grow very slowly and are generally though to have life similar in length to humans.

And on a gross sidenote. Like 40% of them are blind, because they get parasites that burrow into their eyes. But they seem to almost never use their eyes, so even the blind ones can live full lives and grow huge.

Thank you for censoring that.

I don't think the internet could have handled that word.
