As his swords touched the sides of the neck of the last Scral, he looked it straight in the eyes, before he send its head flying into the air. Cleaning his swords, he sheathed them, before moving towards the ruins they had desperately protected. At first glance, there was nothing unusual about it. No strange sensor readings, no confused radars, nothing out of the ordinary at all.
"Fleet Command, come in, this is Group Alpha, I have reached the site, nothing unusual here. Over."
"Roger Alpha, continue your search. Over."
"Fleet Command, there's just some rocks here. Looks like ruins, but nothing else. Should I blow it up, see if that fixes the disturbance? Over."
"Negative Alpha. Continue your search. Over."
"Acknowledge, Fleet Command." he responded, sighing. He had looked forward to blowing it up. He liked blowing things up. A bit too much perhaps, but nobody cared as long as he only blew up Scral things.
He walked to the largest ruin, only to find something unusual as soon as he approached it. The ground beneath his feet disappeared, without disappearing. As if the earth had suddenly been replaced with a hologram.
He fell down, immediately engaging his jet pack to keep him afloat, only to have it shut down by some strange force. He looked down and saw a complex structure, of alien design, almost like a temple. Pushing his thrusters to the maximum, he cursed as a loud blow revealed that they had been shut down as well. He switched towards a cable gun and fired it, managing to hit a long pillar.
As he neared the ground, he felt how the cable gun slowed his descend tremendously. He condescended slowly, gently touching the ground. Just as he sighed in relief, he felt how he got pulled sideways. With an incredibly painful movement, he got smacked against a wall, his suit going haywire, system after system failing.
"EMERGENCY RELEASE!" he screamed, almost panicking. The belts in his suit opened up, releasing him, as his suit cracked in two. It destroyed his suit, but at least he got out.
He landed nimbly on the floor a few feet below. He looked up at his suit, and managed to jump aside in the nick of time as it came crashing down. He cursed, moving towards it, looking if there was anything he could salvage. A gun, a flamethrower, a grenade, anything. But his search turned up nothing. Everything that even remotely contained electronics was useless. He had nothing, safe his swords.
