What exactly is Age of Empires, the wikipedia page is tl;dr, could someone give a short explanation? It seems like the kind of game I'd like.

You start with a few villagers, a town centre and limited supplies, and the map is totally black except for your village. You make new villagers, build houses, collect supplies, build farms, store houses, barracks, and beginning exploring the map. You move through the ages (eg. bronze age to iron age etc) and each different age unlocks more upgrades for your town and army. All the while attacking or defending your town from opposing players.

It's a pretty excellent game, I must say. Started playing it when I was 6 years old when AOE1 came in a Kelloggs cereal box.

If you're looking to get into the franchise I recommend Age of Mythology. Or Age of Empires 3 if you can handle a steeper learning curve. (Although personally I prefer AOM over AOE3)
