When an Avatar is in the avatar state, if they die, the whole cycle is broken, which means no more Avatar. If Aang was truly killed in the avatar state, no one else would become the Avatar, so Amon wouldn't be born an avatar in the first place, so there cannot be an avatar. Korra is the only avatar that exists in the series's era.
