You could also explain the March Hare.

March is the mating season for hares. To attract a mate the male will jump and flip his body to gain attention. It's not uncommon for them to do this so violently that they break their own spines.

Hence the term "Mad as a March Hare".

if inhaled enough it would kill them but they would survive for years they would normally do something that involved their death such as falling out of a window or off a roof but the poisoning itself would take a very long time
