Crazy conspiracy theory time: In trying to cope with his depression, Ryan (from the show Wilfred) created an alter ego of himself in Wilfred, the dog he babysits. The reason why Ryan can only see Wilfred as a human is because Wilfred truly is a regular dog, but only shows up as the Wilfred we know when Ryan is confronted with a problem he can not face on his own. That is why in the episode "Honesty" Wilfred is very much against Ryan figuring out who he truly is, going so far to killing Ryan's spirit guide.

i agree there's no other way for the show to explain itself than for ryan to create Wilfred out of his neglected id and subconcious. That's why at the end of season 1, when Ryan acts like a douche, Wilfred doesn't recognize him since Ryan's true self cannot recognize himself after what he's done. At least that's what i thought before season 2.

And i thought fight club was complex..
