I always thought "Ooh la la" was just a stereotype, like "Ello govna" is for Brits.

But holy ****, French people say "Ooh la la" all. the. time.

It's pretty much our equivalent for "oh, my !"

Well yes, but we don't use it how people think we use it. It's more of a reaction when you see something weird or unusual or when you don't know how to answer a question and don't want to say "um". It's also used as a replacement for "mon dieu" or "oh my god", so it's essentially "oh my gosh."
