Cisgender and cissexual (often abbreviated to simply cis) describe related types of gender identity where an individual's experience of their own gender matches the sex they were assigned at birth.

Got that off of Wikipedia

Pretty sure the name exists more for the purpose of having a scientific identification for everything. You wouldn't write a research people about gender and refer to people as 'Homosexual, bisexual, and normal'. Normal isn't a scientific term, and relates to one's perspective of normal.

But no, edgyjunk just wants to seem really ******* cool again judging by all those thumbs...

I meant Cis' is a scientific term meaning 'on the same side'. Cisgender has been used since roughly 1994, and 1998 in scientific papers on the subject of gender identity. Like it or not, just like heterosexual is a term for males attracted to females (or Vice Versa), there is a scientific term for people who identify with their birth sex and gender.

Believe it or not, the social justice bloggers aren't trying to ruin the world by making it politically correct. Many of them may be misguided, I concede that, but look at the status quo now and tell me there's not some problems that need working on.

Social justice bloggers are on such a new level of stupid that I can't take anything they say seriously because I can't bring myself to agree with a moron. They hurt their cause more than help it. If it was used as a simple identifier the way heterosexual is, I probably wouldn't be so annoyed by it but they try to use it like it's an insult and the very concept of that is beyond retarded.

Actually the actor talking about is Jared Leto, who played a transgender woman in the film dallas buyer's club and is getting backlash for really no reason.

The droideka and other comments comes from the use of "cis" as in "cisgender" (when a person's gendered identity matches their sex) as opposed to "transgender". cis is commonly changed to CIS sarcastically due to the star wars similarity.

The term "cisgendered."

Sociologists Kristen Schilt and Laurel Westbrook define cisgender as a label for "individuals who have a match between the gender they were assigned at birth, their bodies, and their personal identity."

It was in their review called Gender & Society, written in 1987.

People use gender and sex interchangeably, when "sex" is biological and "gender" is more of a social thing due to typical "masculine" and "feminine" gender roles in society.

I wouldn't mind the term too much myself if it wasn't for how it is actually used, because the only time I ever see it used is negatively towards people who identify with the same gender as their sex. Plus it is indeed excessive. You place too much value in the terms "male" and "female" if you think they are placing people of those genders on a pedestal and they need an extra label to put them on par with transgendered in terms of "normalcy". And that is just contradictory as well.

I would love for it to be that simple, but labeling does exist for a reason. It's unavoidable, and in some cases, necessary.

But there's labeling, and then there's overlabeling.

And the point of labeling shouldn't be to put certain people on a pedestal and put down others. Because that's stereotyping and even discriminating.

And the big thing that irks me is when they invent labels for themselves. Most "non-binary" (as in, not one of the two most common) gender identifications are very, very similar and a lot of people in these, at least from what I've seen (because I know that not all transgendered people are like that) want to be treated like special snowflakes.

It's just a label dude, it's got no derogatory meaning behind it, so stop being offended.

I really wonder if it's because I'm in academia that I've never heard cis used as a derogatory term. When I hear/read/use it, it's always just been as a label to clear up communication. It's helpful when talking about transpeople to not have to just say "everyone else" or "non-transpeople" or "other people" or something potentially seriously offensive. It makes me sad that some people would use it to degrade others when trans and its variants have been used offensively for so long... People are people. Labeling can be helpful to clear up communication, but like this? Not okay.

TL;DR: I'm sorry some people suck. Please know that the majority of the people who use the term "cis" don't mean it to be derogatory. The bitter jerks are just the loudest.

Oh excuse me while I go execute my abnormal ass then. Chill the **** out, why are you making such a fuss about it? It does NOT mean normal. It means straight (or something like that in ancient latin) and it's not a term to label but to aid communication

For those of you wondering what CIS is, it means you align yourself with the gender you were born with...apparently we were offending too many people by not giving "normal" people a label and calling someone normal is offensive to everyone else...so...idk

it's just a lablel man, it's a way of communicating and going around talking about people like that implies people who aren't like that aren't "normal".
Cause don't act like there's an inherient negative feeling against things that aren't normal.
We like being uniform and everything fitting in just as much as we like lebels.
get over it.

Actually the logic is that a cis-man and a trans-man can both be called a man. Likewise the same with woman. So when you want to talk about someone's birth gender you use cis or trans because just saying "man" could mean either of those.

Now if you don't see trans-men as men then such a distinction in unneeded for you.

In a nutshell:
Cis male = male gendered, male sex
Cis female = female gendered, female sex

People use gender and sex interchangeably, when "sex" is biological and "gender" is more of a social thing due to typical "masculine" and "feminine" gender roles in society.

I don't like the term myself, as I feel it's only used negatively and doesn't change the meaning of it very much since a "Cis male" is effectively just "male" with no strings attached, and same for women.
