that whole thing about the charmander always boggled me... it dies if the flame on its tail goes out...... and it's deemed safe to take to a fight with a water or wind pokemon? seems very cruel

I always thought rather then the tail acting like a candle it was more like a oil or gas based burn, making it far harder to put out even underwater.

Well, I think the two possibilities are that either the trainers don't care (they force them to fight anyway) or, since trainers are usually young, they assume the pokemon will instinctively protect itself, or not know that the extinguishing would kill the pokemon at all.
