Buddhism isn't a religion. Why are so many people under the impression that it is?

Buddhism is a religion, it may not believe in a deity, but it believes in spirituality and several arts of self-control and following of rules that help the greater good.

This is from the Oxford Dictionary.

Religion: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.

This is the definition. Buddhism does not offer any form of supernatural creation. It is not a religion. It is a philosophy.
User avatar #9295 to #9294 - marinepenguin (02/05/2013) [-]
Fair enough. But why do places like Wikipedia demographics of religion show Buddhism as one of the religions? Someone is obviously incorrect.
#9298 to #9295 - N. Korean citizen (02/05/2013) [-]
That is because historically religion was the greatest source of philosophy and morality. If a person were to get his morals and ideologies he would have to turn to religion. So religion started becoming interchangeable with philosophy and morality. But Buddhism is one of the attempts at providing morals and ideals without the concept of divine enforcement. Philosophy + Divine Ordinance = Religion. Buddhism lacks the second part of the equation. But because over history we started thinking Philosophy = Religion. it got clubbed, and wrongly so.

Actually, Buddhism is a philosophy. However, most Buddhists are Hindu.
User avatar #9631 to #9201 - deadmeme (02/07/2013) [-]
How would that be possible? I know Hindus share ideas with them like reincarnation. But surely it's impossible to be a Buddhist if you have any kind of deity/deities?

religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause of the universe.

atheists believe the universe was created without a God. they have a specific belief concerning the creation of the universe, therefore they are religious

I said I like oxymorons. Sedate your stallions.
Also a lot of atheists don't believe in the Big Bang theory, and as such have no belief on the creation of the universe.
