I feel like that phrase comes from the difference between how men and women see relationships. For example; when a woman REALLY likes a guy, there is a subconscious nagging for her to spend every moment with him. Like when a "crazy" woman wants a man to give up all of his friends, because she wants to be the only thing to make him happy. I feel like every woman experiences this, but some have a much understanding, and control, of it.

Men on the other hand, don't usually get like this. Sure, they might want to spend time with her, but they also value alone time. Men are also (evolutionarily) inclined to fear commitment. So, once a guy spends about a week straight with a girl, he's usually in desperate need to get away from her for a little while. Not because he doesn't like her or he doesn't want a relationship with her, he just needs to miss her again (which doesn't take long).

So when a girl hears "men like a challenge" I think they take it the wrong way. Instead of hearing "Don't throw yourself at him and be clingy" ; they hear "Keep him guessing and never let him know how you feel". In doing this, they almost have to *force* themselves to not want to spend time with him. And when a person does something that's going against what they're naturally inclined to do, they tend to do it to an extreme and clumsily.
