MFW people act like the "selfie" is some new, cancerous trend, despite people taking pictures of themselves for nearly 200 years.
User avatar #45 to #41 - oharo (01/31/2014) [-]
Dude it's been longer than that.
Just without the camera part.
User avatar #46 to #45 - schneidend ONLINE (01/31/2014) [-]
Well, given that you can't take a photograph without a camera, it really hasn't been longer than that.
User avatar #49 to #46 - oharo (01/31/2014) [-]
Cameras just capture light, process it, and reconstruct it on paper.
Eyes capture light, your brain processes it, and your hand reconstructs it.

To me, the difference between a photograph and a painting is negligible, aside from the skills required for the latter. Thus a self-portrait is a selfie.

That's my argument, but it really just hinges on if a selfie requires a camera, and if painters can't be recognized as manual cameras.
User avatar #50 to #49 - schneidend ONLINE (01/31/2014) [-]
A painter can't simply be reproduced. It's not a device, a piece of technology. It's a person, with a skillset, and even the best one will never capture something in exacting detail the way a camera can.
User avatar #53 to #50 - oharo (01/31/2014) [-]
That's a valid argument.
But quite frankly and no offense to you, I'd like to stop discussing the philosophy of selfies. Fun chat though.

Portraits could be painted.
User avatar #51 to #48 - schneidend ONLINE (01/31/2014) [-]
Which, of course, are not photographs.

This is Leonardo Da Vinci, he took a manual selfie.
#32 to #30 - anon (01/31/2014) [-]
Except he did not paint this.

Better than the 1800s selfies where you had to stand still in front of the mirror for an hour

My grandfather is the closest thing i have to a father, my dad abandoned me and my Mom and died soon after, you get a much different perspective on life when the only fatherly advice you get is from someone as experienced as a grandfather, listen to your elders, they didn't get this far from nothing.
User avatar #42 to #4 - silvermarsh (01/31/2014) [-]
Damn man. I had three as well (I'm guessing for the same reason, one of my grandmothers remarried), but I met all three. I only have some memories of one though as he died when I was still little, maybe 8 or so.
User avatar #10 to #4 - gabemczombie (01/31/2014) [-]
I had two. One died before i was born and i never had contact with the other
User avatar #5 to #4 - nikolaier (01/31/2014) [-]
you had three granddads? care to explain?
User avatar #43 to #5 - Denmarrk (01/31/2014) [-]
Actually, you are correct in your final one, one of my grandmas remarried. I feel like it would be awkward with grandfathers, though, since i'm a girl and their set-and-stone guy ways might make me feel strange. I'm probably far off in this prediction but I don't know.
#8 to #5 - anon (01/31/2014) [-]
It's obvious.

The poster must have had a set of homosexual grandparents, or perhaps had a great-grandfather whom the poster is counting.
