I don't think anyone should be allowed to buy a gun that can shoot a bazillion times without reloading, and that means probably anything military-grade. IMO, it's ridiculous that people like Jared Loughner (the Tucson guy who shot the Congresswoman), the Aurora shooter, and the Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooter were able to get guns like that. A rifle is good enough for protection, to hunt, and to fight, which is what the founding fathers intended when they included the second amendment in the Constitution.
I agree, keep the M4A1 in Military, Paramilitary (SWAT), and Police, not to the citizens. We citizens should keep our muzzleloaders, hunting shotguns and rifles, pistols, and airsoft/paintball, but anything like an M4A1, HK MP5, Benelli M4 Super 90 (military grade shotgun), or a Knights Armor M110 sniper rifle should be kept away from citizens, they have no other purpose but to kill people by people, mostly crazy people :P. As far as pistols are concerned that also depends, a machine pistol should be kept off the streets and only be put in military, but if it's a revolver (including the Smith and Wesson 500), or a simple repeater (if you pardon my celebrity pick here) like the Walter PPK then it should only be purchased for self defense and be kept at home off the streets. We have the right to bear arms but we shouldn't have the right to purchase a Barrett .50 cal...
