My friends' mother had a heart attack today. They're fairly poor and I don't think they have power. If by any chance she needs some some form of surgery or is super serious she's fucked, because they won't be able to pay for it. I will be angry for months because I love that whole family and those goddamn fools on capitol hill were too busy fucking around before like 2011 to get a fucking healthcare bill passed and Obamacare doesn't even start for another year.

Hospitals are and have long been REQUIRED to treat people for life-threatening conditions, regardless of the patients' financial standing.
They also have no legal authority to come after people who can't pay them. The only time people were ever hounded for it were when some desperately underfunded hospitals sold their debt to collectors.
These are the very conditions under which hospitals are tax-exempt entities.
