I'm pro-choice but believe the woman should talk with the father of the baby (if he's around), her family, and most importantly, her doctor, before making a decision. Make an informed choice. For "late term" abortions I really think the woman should have made a decision by then, but if circumstances turn dire (health complications, partner dies) then I suppose it should be allowed. As for "forcing" Catholic or other religious institutions to perform abortions I don't have a definitive view. I want to respect their beliefs but they're also HOSPITALS and should serve their patients.

CCpieman (01/25/2013) [-] Going off of this, how do you guys feel about the concept of someone committing a "double-homicide" if they kill a pregnant woman? It seems like doublethink to me, but I could just be an idiot. I'm not sure how laws like that are in America, but I think if the woman is in the late 2nd or the 3rd trimester, and she's absolutely sure she wants to have her baby, it could then be considered a "person" and protected by the law. This is a fuzzy concept for me, hoping to hear some more opinions.

brettd (01/25/2013) [-] I personally am pro-life in all situations minus serious health complications for the mother. I'm not your stereotypical born-again rightwing fascist, though. I am a republican, but I'm also agnostic and my views are based entirely upon my own opinions. I sat down and thought about it for a long time, and I just couldn't justify taking the life of another human in any way, regardless of the circumstances. It's more an issue of morality for me.

Ruspanic (01/25/2013) [-] The question is whether human beings have the same status and rights before birth as they do after, since obviously during much of development they lack any sort of cognitive function or awareness. It requires a great deal of philosophizing about the nature of rights, "personhood", ethics, and so on. Give this a read.

It's not objective, and while you or I might be adamant about our own senses of what is right and wrong, we might still disagree with each other and there's no way for either of us to be objectively correct because morality requires subjective judgment by sentient beings.

After an undetermined point, they should need an actual reason, such as a threat to the mother's health. After that point if they don't want the kid they need to have it and put it in foster care.

When people have children, that child has a purpose in societies future. When the baby is killed, the potential for the future is diminished greatly. As for forcing Christian hospitals to do abortions, the key word is FORCE, if the hospitals had choice, they probably would deny the patient and abortion.
