In retrospect, I think Newt Gingrich would have had a better candidate. Don't get me wrong, I like Romney but he was picked because he was seen as "more likely to win". After seeing the election play out it seems like a lot of the assumptions made about their advantages/disadvantages didn't work out.
-Gingrich's debate skills were written off because people though debates wouldn't matter. Romney's biggest bump came from a debate. Gingrich's could have been even larger.
-It was thought that Gingrich's affairs would haunt him. The democrats MVP in the campaign was Bill Clinton and his affair and impeachment wasn't even mentioned. They couldn't criticize Newt and use Clinton at the same time.
-Romney's business record ended being a liability rather than a strength.
-Romney's moderate grab didn't work and it cost him base turnout. Gingrich wouldn't have compromised continuity and enjoyed larger turnout.
-Gingrich is a lot more charismatic, in the end it came down to enthusiasm and Romney couldn't generate it.
-Gingrich's balls of steel would have gotten him past hurdles Romney couldn't. i.e. Romney had to lay low during crucial last week campaigning while Obama had the spotlight. This gave Obama a bump that won the election. Gingrich would have gotten out there.
