User avatar #3729 - gigantustesticulus (06/12/2012) [-]
im getting pokemon black this weekend and means as i have no experience at all with 5th gen pokemon i've decided i want a team ready before i begin, so first things first starter. oshawott or tepig?
#3737 to #3729 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
They're both good in terms of attack stats. Tepig gains a fighting type and becomes incredibly slow and bulky, whereas Oshawott becomes a moderately slow attacker. They both learn pretty unique moves; Oshawott can eventually learn X-Scissor and Megahorn, and Tepig can learn moves like Head Smash and Wild Charge (basically a weaker version of Volt Tackle introduced in 5th gen).
Pic is Base Stats of their final evolutions, so pick your poison.

thanks for your help, if you wanna see the team im thinking of it's in a reply to dragontaming down here somewhere!

Snivy is good for Support, sorta like Meganium
User avatar #3741 to #3739 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
I know, but he didn't really ask about Snivy.
User avatar #3746 to #3741 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
You don't find alot of support Pokemon throughout Unova, and I found White to be easier than Black, as I chose Snivy in White and Oshawott in Black
User avatar #3753 to #3746 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
Alomomola, Audino, Liepard, Musharna, Unfezant, Gigalith, Whimsicott, Sigilyph, Cofagrigus, Amoonguss, Ferrothorn, and Mandibuzz are all good support Pokes.
User avatar #3759 to #3753 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Musharna's special attack is higher than it's defenses, Unfezant has high attack, Gigalith's attack is barely higher than it's defense, Sigilyph has high Special Attack, Mandibuzz can't be obtained in the wild in White
User avatar #3761 to #3759 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
But gigantustesticulus bought Black.
And just because a Pokemon has high attack stats doesn't mean that it can't be used as support.
User avatar #3765 to #3761 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Tell me this: Can Haxorus, Blaziken, Arcanine, Entei, Swampert, Rayquaza, Groudon, Alakazam, and Gallade be good for support?
User avatar #3767 to #3765 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
Not purely, not purely, not purely, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.
User avatar #3784 to #3767 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Gallade's defense and health: low as shit. Swampert: same as gallade. Alakazam, fuck no, low ass health, never even exceeds 300, little to no defense, mediocre special defense. Arcanine: Attacker with high speed and shit defenses
User avatar #3841 to #3784 - lolmasterx (06/13/2012) [-]
Gallade can act as a great special wall, plus it has access to Bulk Up, so it can raise its DEF. Plus it has Trick, so it can put a Choice Item or a Flame/Toxic Orb on to something that doesn't want it.
Swampert has great bulk with its massive HP and 90/90 Defences, plus it has access to Stealth Rock and Roar, and Scald.
Alakazam also has access to Trick, and it can set up Dual Screens, or it can Knock Off an opponent's item.
Arcanine is one of my "not purely"s because of its low defences, but it can help out in Double Battles with its access to Helping Hand, and it has Flash Fire, so it can interrupt an opponent's sweep from, say, a Heatran, then dish out a Close Combat. It also has Body Slam, so it can get parahax on some stuff. And 80/80 Defences aren't bad.
User avatar #3843 to #3841 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
One: Alakazam with Knock Off is doing everything wrong. A pokemon who's attack rarely, if not never, reaches 200 using a physical attack. Light Screen and Reflect won't save it's ass from a Dark Pulse or Crunch or any other SE move
User avatar #3849 to #3843 - lolmasterx (06/13/2012) [-]
You'd be surprised, actually. My Mew, who I didn't EV Train in Defence at all, survived a Megahorn when it was at about 70 HP with about 30 HP to spare after it set up a Reflect.
User avatar #3850 to #3849 - lolmasterx (06/13/2012) [-]
Also, Knock Off isn't used for its offensive power. I see it run on Shuckles all the time.
User avatar #3852 to #3850 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
And how long would Alakazam, who's defense pretty much never reaches 200, survive in a single battle?
User avatar #3856 to #3852 - lolmasterx (06/13/2012) [-]
If it were at full HP, it would survive.
I'm saying that it CAN be used as support, I'm not saying it SHOULD be.
User avatar #3756 to #3753 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Liepard has high attack and special attack -_-
User avatar #3760 to #3756 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
It can learn Taunt, Fake-Out, Captivate, Torment, Thunder Wave and Yawn. Tell me that's not good support.
User avatar #3762 to #3760 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
It's more for attacking, as proved by it's stats
User avatar #3764 to #3762 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
Just because a Poke has high attack stats doesn't mean it can't be used as support.
User avatar #3730 to #3729 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
All 3 starters are terrible, you're gonna want to replace them as soon as possible
User avatar #3733 to #3730 - gigantustesticulus (06/12/2012) [-]
i agree after looking on serbii none are that great, so what pokemon should i attain first before i can get rid of my starter?
User avatar #3738 to #3733 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Unfortunately, you can only get both of them after the 2nd gym, with Frillish being after you get Surf and Darumuka in the desert by Castelia city. Panpour can be found in any forest in rustling grass
User avatar #3775 to #3738 - gigantustesticulus (06/12/2012) [-]
do you think that this is a well rounded team?

musharna Psychic Shadow Ball Charge Beam Moonlight
excadrill Sword dance earthquake metal claw rock slide
sawk bulk up, close combat, retaliate, dig
haxorus(in your honour!) dragon dance, dragon claw, rock slide, EQ
chandelure calm mind,energy ball,flamethrower,shadow ball
swanna surf,fly,air slash, roost
User avatar #3790 to #3775 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
The wierd thing is how half of that team is what I used against N and Ghetsis. Zekrom, Haxorus, Sawk, Chandelure, Seismitoad, and Boldore was just there to be there
User avatar #3791 to #3790 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
Chandelure also had the exact same moveset during those battles as well
#3786 to #3775 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
Haxorus? In my...

yes in your honour, pick a nickname for him
User avatar #3797 to #3793 - dragontaming (06/13/2012) [-]
I don't give nicknames to any Pokemon, or use any with one
User avatar #3798 to #3797 - gigantustesticulus (06/13/2012) [-]
FINE! i'll keep it as haxourus.. in your honour
User avatar #3778 to #3775 - lolmasterx (06/12/2012) [-]
Looks pretty good to me. No glaringly obvious weaknesses.
My team from my most recent run of Black was
Serperior- Leaf Blade, Hidden Power Fire, Toxic, Growth
Zebstrika- Wild Charge, Pursuit, Stomp, Thunder Wave
Krookodile- Crunch, Dig, Rock Slide, Foul Play
Beartic- Icicle Crash, Shadow Claw, Brick Break, Surf
Druddigon- Dragon Claw, Crunch, Revenge, Chip Away
Mienshao- Jump Kick, U-turn, Swift, Drain Punch
User avatar #3795 to #3778 - gigantustesticulus (06/13/2012) [-]
for your help kind sir i would like you to name one of these fine beasts other than haxorus:)
User avatar #3785 to #3778 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
Coil is the better move for Serperior, due to the defense increase and Serperior being a supporter. Krookodile, I'd say add in Swagger instead of Crunch, to make Foul Play even stronger.
User avatar #3736 to #3733 - dragontaming (06/12/2012) [-]
If you choose Tepig, Darumuka. Oshawott, try catching a wild Panpour or Frillish
