i need to be educated on EVs, because the more i read this board the more stupid i feel.

here's what i've been doing. when i want to make a certain Pokemon into serious battling material, i give them an Exp. Share, stick them in my party, and then sweep through powerful opponents with my lvl 100 Charizard. meanwhile, i force-feed them every type of vitamin i can until they won't take anymore. i find this to be much faster than normal EV-training, but as i read the board i'm starting to think it's not the most effective method.

Using vitamins will only give you a certain amont of EVs; each gives 10 EVs, and won't give beyond 100. The max amount of total EVs each pokemon can have is 510. The max amount for each stat is 255. So sweepers would usually have their attack and speed EVs maxed out (Archeops is an excellent example). The way you obtain more EVs without using vitamins are going out and fighting pokemon. They don't have to be trainers; wild will do just fine. For more info, check out this site:

what depresses me is the 510 limit. that means i'll never have a perfect Charizard...feelsbadman

It is smart to do. What I did was max out my Charizard's Speed and Special Attack EVs, so he has a better chance of going first and since his Special Attack is his best stat. But it's not always smart to go for attack/Special Attack and speed. Snorlax, for example, is an excellent tank, so for Snorlax it would be best to max his HP and then either his Attack or Defense/Special defense
