I heard this question on That Metal Show, so I thought I should bring it to the board to hear what you fellas think.

Old Metallica Vs. New Metallica
(Old = Kill 'Em All - ...And Justice For All)
(New = (The Black Album) - Death Magnetic)

If I tell you that Justice is by far their best work I think it will answer your question.
Anything before or after is nothing really.
They weren't pioneers and they weren't particularly good at thrash either.

I think it was good for them to have a change (eg Load) but then they took it too far (eg Reload) and then tried to make up for it with too much Old Metallica (eg St Anger) and now they are back to where they should be. Of course in my mind Lulu never existed.

TL;DR All Metallica Albums have their strong points and weaknesses

Im probably gonna get thumbed down to hell for this, but Metallica is extremly overrated.

I like The Black Album, but I choose the old Metallica.
