This is assuming that there is a force behind it counteracting the friction...

Otherwise from that and the fact that it wouldn't happen as smoothly as this gif makes it look, it seems accurate.

It's a mathematical problem, not a physics problem. The gif is describing the motion required to manouvre it through the L shape. The idea is to find the largest sized "sofa" which can get around the corner.
