I am pretty sure its banned in public due to the danger of what lasers can do to eyes.

I don't think people are just like "OH **** A SNIPER" in the middle of the street.

I'd like to know why they even bother with a laser on a sniper anyways. If you've got a sniper, you're looking through the sights. A little red dot isn't gonna help at all, that's what you have the crosshairs for.

Why don't people take cover or wear helmets? Hollywood is very inaccurate.

I am doubting that that is the reason as to why they were banned. They're annoying and can cause retina damage when shined in someone's eyes. Stronger lasers can also cause potential problems for passing air traffic. i.e. Pilots on approach don't enjoy being blinded when turning onto final. I can assure you, the banning of lasers has little to nothing to do with snipers.

Your cell phone camera can actually detect all sorts of infrared light including IR lasers which are invisible to the naked eye. Try it yourself:

Turn on your cell phone camera, point a tv remote at the lens and press a few buttons.

They aren't illegal because of snipers, they're illegal in public places because you can temporarily blind someone with them.

Two lads from my area got 3 years each for pointing them at planes.

then there's the retina damage you can cause by flashing them into peoples eyes... but no... snipers... snipers are a more rational explanation.

Next to no snipers use laser pointers as light is not affected by gravity or the Coriolis effect and therefore not effective at all from long range and obvious from short range.

I want an RF laser, so instead of precision, it just kills anyone near it

A laser on a sniper rifle is basically useless.
A weapon mounted laser has been developed specifically for CQB applications, because that is usually where you cannot always aim with a full sight picture, therefore the need for alternative methods of target aquisition grew stronger.

It's basically there so you can see where the bullets will go, although you are not specifically aiming, rather determine it very fast from your hip or while looking at the target as a whole. Of course, aiming is preferred, but not always possible in situations where miliseconds can make a difference.
