I actually am not all that afraid of titans in our modern setting. I mean, sure the initial impact would be horrible with millions dead. But after the military started reacting, i think it would be handled quickly. The number one reason titans are so overwhelming in the manga/anime is because firearms are so antiquated that they can not do a large amount of damage to the titans large frame. But we now have tanks, bombers, DUC's, automatic weapons, explosive bullets, etc. You have to damage a titans neck to kill them, so why not blow the entire body to hell?

No, it does not. The people in the manga make repeated references to technology, society, stories, and even fables from the 15-16th century. One of the soldiers specifically mentions wearing body armor and being a knight, another mentions how humans attempted to use castles(and not 500 foot tall skyscrapers, a few episodes even takes place in a castle/fort), and another mentions how amazing the 3D gear is and how it is the greatest titan fighting technology mankind ever made(even if technology was lost, the stories of it's existence would still live on), and lets not forget Sawneyand Bean who were named after a 16th century story called The Tale Of Sawny Bean.

I can imagine us doing pretty well against titans if we needed to fight them. Blowing off the entire neck and head from the shoulders up would be enough to take one down. What I'd be afraid of, though, are the small titans getting into buildings.

the only way that you can kill a titan is severing half a meter worth of flesh in back of the titan's neck. let's use a suburban/city area as an example. hundreds of people would be killed by the titans exploding into existence within the first few hours of the outbreak which would kill hundreds more people from wreckages. then, with people having to run into the streets, they would be in clear sight of the titans which would be the end of hundreds of more people. it would take hours to evacuate civillians and keep the titans at bay. which would cause thousands of people and soldiers to die. the military has a 3% chance of killing a titan at first encounter. they would take days or weeks to discover the titan's weakness. The military would have to employ billions of dollars worth of heavy artillery to civillian areas which could exhaust military budgets further than the two world wars. within the first months populations would dwindle and most humans would be surviving within bunkers and be in hiding at sea. it would take an extra month to develop a way to defeat the titans. at that point, it would take another month to train soldiers which would still only land them at a 45% chance of killing the titans. overall, giant regenerative people killing everyone would be as bad as possible for the human race. it's even hinted in the comics that the humans devolved from a more advanced society because of the titans

A predator drone firing hellfire missiles would be able to kill a titan within minutes if not seconds,and that's technology we already have developed, produced and deployed. That's not even getting into the serious stuff. You shoot a Davy Crockett at one of them, and even if its 60 meters tall, you're not just going to sever its neck, you will literally blow it to smithereens.

Where is it hinted at in the comics that they had a more advanced technology state at one time? I have read the manga and seen the anime. They specifically state that one of the reasons titans were so easily able to overthrow humanity was because they DIDN'T have advanced technology or firearms.

In addition, I specifically stated that millions of people would die and said that "after the military started reacting" everything would be handled quickly.. As for deployment costs, I am sure some counties would fare better or worse than others. I myself am less than 20 miles from a military weapons depot with dozens of tanks, jets, bombers, and even a high security bunker/arsenal complex. My country would fare better than another, but considering we have the technology to fire a DUC round 50 miles and hit a target 2 inches in diameter, I doubt a 30-40 foot unarmored behomoth would be hard to hit with a crippling blow.

Not trying to be a jerk, it is just simple logic. The society in the manga only has single shot unrifled black powder firearms firing short range solid ball ammo. We have so very VERY much more at our disposal from ships to bombers to attack helicopters to tanks to the rifle on a soldiers back and the LAW in his hands.

I can agree that our technology at this stage is much better than their late renaissance/pre-industrial age technology, but with civilians being crucial for militia forces and frontline soldiers being limited and expendable, advanced weaponry is useless without people to properly use it considering that the titan's supposed invincibility would take it's toll on the military's forces during the early stages of the titan's war. shooting a titan to bits with a high powered rocket launcher would be useless if you can't sever the back of the neck.

40% Of the United States population is active, reserved, or retired military. Another 5% is active or retired law enforcement, although there may be some overlap with military of course. Again, I know not every country is set up like America. I just don't see a titan invasion making the human race all but extinct.

The events on AoT are supposed to take place in the future. The tanks, nukes, and everything else, couldn't stop the titans. In the end, the few survivors managed to wall themselves in, somehow, but were lacking in the tech they once had, and were isolated from the resources they'd need to remake it, so it was eventually lost to time (not to mention, with a very limited amount of resources, it's pretty hard to set up an electrical grid, so that went the way of everything else, hence candles and rudimentary clothing). The only reasonably technologically advanced weaponry they managed to make were the 3D maneuvering gear, which are run on natural gas (which has a finite supply).

the reason they're so wide spread is because the true titans have the ability to make more titans kinda like Vampires making spawn and because the true titans have super powers that can only really be rivaled by other titans, heavy artillery wouldn't do very much to something like the armored titan who's skin is harder than reinforced steel nor would it greatly effect the collosal titan who has the ability to dematerialize and materialize instantly releasing boiling hot steam when he does and is also over 50 meters tall.
The only thing I could think that our modern military could really do to avoid the titans would be to nuke the source of the outbreak before it spread but given the nature of the governments of the world I doubt this would happen.

One big difference between real world and the Titan's world; Air Superiority. For all everyone's talking about our bombs and advanced weaponry, fact of the matter is with planes and helicopters the titan's greatest strength i.e; that their weak point is high and generally hard to reach now becomes a non-issue. also since they cant fly we can just swoop over and carpet bomb them into nothing. And any that start to regenerate will be so dismembered it would be a simple matter to roll a tank over the back of their necks and end them.

Indeed, buw it would be easy to track the 60m in either form, and a bullet travels a lot faster than even the greatest of humans can. And if youve read the manga/watched the anime, you know titan shifters are 100% human in human form, a bullet would end the problem. Or carpet bombing.

As for the armored titan, a DUC could easily destroy him. Just look into how depleted uranium based cannons work. Really awe inspiring to see a tank round go through 8 feet of steel.

Titans versus the modern military would be a very one sided fight with the military having a crushing victory.

Even with the whole superpowers and ****, we have nuclear weapons, Bombs big enough to erase a whole block from a city, and big freaking rockets. The armored titan might have a skin stronger than reinforced steel, but it wont stand a chance against a Grand Slam or a BLU-82. Even the Colossal titan can be pretty overwhelmed. Just get 20 M270 aimed at where he is and he dies.

Sure, lots of people are going to die at first, but we have an amazing amount of firepower to deal with those things. Attack on titan guys have muzzleload cannon and swords. They dont have MLRS, tanks, air support, battleships or the like.
