Titans in a modern setting is really just a pushover. A WWI tech level society could survive in a titan infested world so definitely no problem for us.

With modern weaponry and with the right ammunition, hitting the nape of the neck is not gonna be that hard. Titan regen has limits as demonstrated by Eren. Probably won't be able to bring down skyscrapers. Those titans are light as **** for their size.

I don't know man, a lot seems to imply that AoT actually takes place in the future.

Like?

Asian's being part of a "now rare race" for one, the fact that there's almost some sort of strange bio mechanical theme among the titans (the steam, the human controllers), almost like they're some kind of bio weapon turned unexplained monsters. The fact that a lot of the show seems to draw from German theme's, giving some slight indication that the setting may indeed be earth.

Like I said, it implies that AoT takes place on Earth in some regressed future, not full out says though.

Nah, look back at the scene where the teacher is teaching them history about the titans. They say that when mankind was in great numbers they were still wiped out and that canons were useless and they show a bunch of slides. If you look at those slides you can see that they were like medieval settings with horses and spears and canons. If it had been in the future they would've shown tanks or some other more advanced **** . Still the most advanced tech they have is canons.

That... is horribly short of "a lot seems to imply" evidence. If it is earth it's some kind of alternate earth where the laws of physics are... weak.

Agreed that thisotherdude didn't provide clear details but I think I might get the picture a bit. I'm not saying any of us is wrong because the plot is open to theories from the audience. I felt that because the advancement in the maneuver gear thing and the evidence of guns that the military police carry, as well as modern clothing that there was a time of technological advancement like the early 1900s but titans threw them back years behind in development, and due to limited resources within the walls the people were forced into another medieval to renaissance like era but with fresher ideas.

They have plenty of resources if the whole kill/death ratio doesn't bother them in the least(This includes the 3D gear, 12 blades, harness, clothes). It's also be hypothesized the walled city is about as large as western europe(probably a lot smaller). What they lack is food.

Also, when Hanji recalls an era of human history when they used to fight each other she recalled medieval knights.... So it can't be 1900s since they wouldn't even know what a knight is.

Ohh but it would definitely have to be around 17th-18th century considering the fact that they had knowledge of Sawney Bean, whose story took place around 15th-16th century Scotland. And if the titans first appeared a century ago around the time of Sawney Bean's case then we can say it's definitely come a little closer to an industrial era.

Makes a lot of sense. So then it is a possibility that it's a transition from medieval era to renaissance era. And as it;s known as an era of innovation I guess they weren't shy of the idea of making uniforms that adjusted to their combat style, or the fact that women could also take part in the battle against the titans.
User avatar #147 to #145 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
"laws of physics are... weak"

They need both a couple of massive grappling hooks and a **** ton of steam being expelled in order for it to do a damn thing, otherwise they're just throwing around glorified ropes or blowing off steam (hue) without moving anywhere. The physics are a lot more sound than anything batman has done, and batman (generally) does take place on earth.
User avatar #150 to #147 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
It's still impossible to do so in real life.

The titans regenerate using energy from what again? Cause the sun is sure as hell not enough to fuel bodily regeneration on that scale. They would also crumble under their own weight due physics as well.
User avatar #157 to #150 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
And a man dressing up in a latex bat suit throwing metal boomerangs at Mexican's who can hulk out is more realistic? I think we can give the actual physics behind AoT a little bit of wiggle room considering it is an anime.

I'm more focusing on the overall culture itself, nothing seems to imply any of these cultures are not very Earth like, mostly presented as German with a few Asians. There's nothing that has been shown to be completely "magic." There may be very little solid evidence that implies it is Earth in the future, but there's nothing that implies that the setting isn't Earth, there's certainly more evidence to the contrary.
User avatar #160 to #157 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
The titans themselves is "magic", 3D gear is "magic ish"
I never mentioned comics being more realistic or anything of the like....
User avatar #162 to #160 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
Where exactly does it say titan's or 3D gear is magic? Once again, it's anime, it doesn't have to be 100% realistic in order to still be set in our general world. Black Lagoon has so much over the top **** in it that would be completely impossible in reality but the setting isn't in anyway supernatural or on a different planet. We have no explanation for what the titan's are, that's the great mystery of the show, but there's nothing that has just said "they're just magic." Eren Became a titan after his father injected him with some odd fluid, leading more to the bioweapon assumption than to a magic assumption.

Also I was just trying to show that just because something doesn't follow the laws of physics and science down to the smallest tiny aspect doesn't mean it's set in another world/reality.
User avatar #164 to #162 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
How else would they possibly exist if not in a alternate reality where the physics are different.
User avatar #165 to #164 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
Highly advanced technology, anime science, ext... Use your imagination.

Do you think every time man kind makes a technological breakthrough that was considered impossible once that everyone on Earth is actually transported to a alternate reality?
User avatar #168 to #165 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
Rephrase that cause I have no idea what you're trying to say.
User avatar #169 to #168 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
You consider titans impossible, therefore according to you a future with titans has to be set in a completely alternate reality that has absolutely nothing to do with Earth

People in the 1800's considered flying machines impossible, therefore according to them a future with flying machines has to be set in a completely alternate reality that has absolutely nothing to do with Earth
User avatar #172 to #169 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
What are you talking about. They had flying balloons in 1800s.
User avatar #178 to #172 - thisotherdude (02/11/2014) [-]
A balloon isn't really much of a machine.
User avatar #180 to #178 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
They still knew that flying was not impossible and it can only advance from there. The Wright brothers were experimenting on wing warping to control an aircraft.

They also had a monoplane in 1874.

Actually, AoT is supposed to be set in a future world, and that they just lost all of their technology. (Not sure that that's just what I heard, apparently that's what the manga author said)
User avatar #138 to #136 - Tormound (02/11/2014) [-]
citation please and just hearsay. I just assume it's some kind of alternate reality where our modern day society didn't happen since first off, we would never have lost. Second, they break the laws of physics which cannot be broken.

It's not. Just some wild rumor people immediately cling to.
