Annual salary on minimum wage is $15k before taxes. Annual cost of living is $33k in my state, which is well below the national average. I can and do save money, but it gets used, typically on things associated with living in low-cost housing & using low-cost vehicles, what little is left goes into offsetting student loans while in school. Yeah, you can save up $3k, but you're not gonna save up $3k in expendable income anytime soon.

Almost 1 in 4 people in Illinois live in Chicago, so it only seems fair to account for that very large section of population. Regardless, large cities with higher rents exist in every state, not just Illinois. It's not going to skew it any more than it does for any other state, but you still need to account for these people when most of our country lives in metropolitan areas.

Nah, I think it's just grandparents who planned out their retirement wisely. Think someone with money-smarts who had multiple savings accounts/retirement funds/pensions coming in. They could be easily racking in thousands a month of all that money and interest from 40+ years.

Even if you are poor most of your life, one thing you should stick to is a proper retirement fund and other long term investments. Then in your older age, you can be ******* loaded and don't have to worry about people taking care of you.
