From the Star Wars wiki: The weapon consisted of a blade of pure plasma energy emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field. The field contained the immense heat of the plasma, protecting the wielder, and allowed the blade to keep its shape.

It's not really a laser, it's a super heated beam of plasma that is kept in place by a magnetic field generator in the hilt of the light saber.

So guys.

The battery sends a surge of power forward that powers a plasma laser. The laser shoots through three different crystals that modify it for color and effect, and then proceeds through the lense. It shoots forward and gets bounced back by the electromagnetic field, which sends it straight back into the battery. (That's why lightsabers rarely run out of energy; they basically feed themselves power).

When it hits things, it interrupts the EM field juuuust long enough to **** the victim up with plasma. As soon as it burns through, the EM field closes.
